Mad King Ludwig of Bavaria, His Fairy Tale Castles, and Richard Wagner

Nikolaus Hohmann, Ph.D.
Saturday, August 28 | 10 – 11:40 a.m.
IN-PERSON: Guzman Lecture Hall | Not Recorded
Louis II (Ludwig), King of Bavaria, represented one of the oldest and most prestigious royal families of Europe. A friend of Otto von Bismarck and Richard Wagner, Louis was a willing instrument for both men’s soaring ambitions. A talented and imaginative artist, Louis built some of the most famous castles in Europe, including the iconic Neuschwanstein. And as a romantic dreamer, in love with beauty, yet ever more isolated and lonely, Louis was easy to inspire, easy to manipulate, and, ultimately, easy to murder.
