An art exhibition at Dominican University of California has been recognized in the recently published SAGE Encyclopedia of Filipina/x/q American Studies, the first ever encyclopedia of Filipino American history.

The exhibition – “Remythologizing Filipino Archetypes: 50 Shades of Kayumanggi” – featured contemporary San Francisco Bay Area Filipino American artists deconstructing and reinterpreting Filipino cultural mythologems. The Opening Reception was August 30,2018 in the Alemany Library on the Dominican campus. The exhibition, curated by O.M. France Viana, was on display in the library from June 29 through September 15, 2018 featuring these artists: Michael Arcega, Kimberley Arteche, Francis Calimlim, Cece Carpio, John Yoyogi Fortes, Mik Gaspay, Rea Lynn de Guzman, Johanna Poethig, Sherwin Rio, Lordy Rodriguez, Charlene Tan, Pamela Ybañez, Catherine Wagner, Jenifer Wofford, and O.M. France Viana.

“This is quite an honor for Dominican University, particularly because it is an institution that celebrates and supports diversity and intercultural understanding,” says Sandi Chin, Director of University Community Exhibitions. “We hope that this will encourage the University's artistic community to continue to refocus art as an inclusive and cultural lens that will enrich the learning experience.”

According to O.M. France Viana, there are only about five exhibitions mentioned in the Visual Arts section out of hundreds since the beginning of Fil/Am time. The entry in the SAGE Encyclopedia of Filipina/x/q American Studies appears on page 1031 of the second volume.

The exhibit at Dominican also was highlighted in a Marin Independent Journal feature story.
