Traveling to Buenos Aires this summer to participate in the Barowsky School of Business’ Global Consulting Practicum was an invaluable experience for Josh Godoy ’16 and ’18 MBA in his new job with a worldwide software company headquartered in San Francisco.

The practicum was designed to give MBA students real-world global experiences serving as consultants to businesses based in Argentina. The students devised strategic solutions and recommendations for their clients, drawing on the advanced business skills they've acquired and practiced in the MBA program.

The Global Consulting Practicum in the Barowsky School of Business aligns with the MBA’s focus that combines core and elective business courses with a global consulting trip and resume-building experiential learning opportunities all designed to give students such as Josh a competitive edge in the workplace.

“It taught us to be agile and adaptive,” says Josh, a Sales Development Representative for Zendesk. “Business is worldwide, so taking you out of your element to see what it's like to conduct business in a foreign country is extremely valuable.”

The Argentina trip continued Josh’s run of good fortune. Earlier this year, a former Dominican soccer teammate, John Sansone ’14 and ’15 MBA, suggested to Josh that he pursue a position at Zendesk. John has been a Latin America account executive at Zendesk since July 2016.

Josh jumped at the opportunity. Earning his MBA at Dominican is part of Josh’s long-term plan for moving up the corporate ladder.

“I would love to be at Zendesk long term as it is a great company, and having my MBA will allow that growth without any hiccups,” he says. “Having my MBA is something I knew may not necessarily affect me short term, but a benefit I will see in the long run. Dominican has prepared me to have that confidence in myself, and put me in situations to succeed in collaborating with others, which is essential in today's workforce.”

Josh, who graduated from San Marin High School in Novato, originally came to Dominican as an undergraduate student-athlete to play soccer and stay close to family. He was drawn to the tight-knit community on campus and the individual attention that came with it.

“I knew I didn't want to sit in an auditorium of 200 plus people for a lecture,” Josh says. “A small class size where the teacher actually knew me was important for me and my education.”

Josh majored in Public Health and minored in both Communications and Spanish. His interest in nutrition and well-being aligned with his goals as a student-athlete, staying fit, and being well-rounded. Josh’s ultimate goal, however, was to earn his masters.

“As I was going through my undergrad, it was evident to me that a master’s degree is now the benchmark,” Josh says. “The MBA came about because Dominican offered it, and the flexibility it brought was very easy for me to transition into. An MBA from Dominican allows me to go into various industries, and not be pinned to one industry in particular by getting a concentration and consequently go back to school.”

Josh said his communication and critical thinking skills were enhanced in Dr. Thomas Cavanagh’s Strategic Leadership course.

“That class really developed my ability to be an effective communicator as well as presenter,” Josh says. “He taught us different strategies to cope with different approaches to ensure that your audience understood your message.”

With the relationships he developed at Dominican, Josh felt enriched.

“For me, my Dominican experience was collaboration. Through class discussion and group work I was able to not only learn from teachers, but also from my classmates,” he says. “This especially held true in my MBA years. It helped me build confidence in myself, and taught me how to work and be successful with different personalities. Not everyone is the same, therefore your approach to everyone can't be the same.”
