Born and raised in Hong Kong, Kitsum was the 6th Hong Kong-trained graduate in occupational therapy. She was one of the pioneer therapists to work with head injuries in community-based programs as well as an onsite therapist in industrial settings in the 1990s. She specializes in neuromotor and cognitive rehabilitation with adults who have acquired brain injury conditions, and she received her certification as a stroke rehabilitation specialist in 2016. She also has advanced certifications in Neuro-Developmental Therapy and Neuro-IFRAH for the management and treatment of adults with hemiplegia together with advanced training in Bioness, Myomo, and Saebo, and other contemporary interventions used in the treatment of hemiplegic upper extremities. Additionally, Kitsum also holds advanced practice license in California in hand therapy and physical agent modalities, and she is a certified FallProof instructor and master trainer for the Matter of Balance program.

Research Interests

Kitsum focuses on four main areas in her scholarship:

  1. Cognitive assessment and interventions that impact functional improvement in adults with acquired brain injuries and cancer survivors
  2. Multi-factorial fall prevention program for older adults
  3. Older adults’ resiliency to age-in-place
  4. Interprofessional education
