Global Learning

A fundamental part of your Dominican Experience and journey to becoming a global citizen is learning about yourself and appreciating cultural diversity. The best way to learn how we are all connected is to spend time living and learning in a foreign country.

Global Learning: Study Abroad

Study Abroad is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a new country, while earning academic credit abroad.

Global Learning Highlights

Dominican Semester Abroad and Global Courses include:

  • Programs available for every major
  • All credits earned abroad count toward graduation
  • All financial aid and scholarships apply towards program cost
  • Programs taught in English (no foreign language experience required)

Choosing the Right Program

From semester-long exchange programs, to summer courses abroad, we will help you find a program that is right for you.  Contact the Global Education Office to find a program that fits your personal and academic goals.

All of our semester abroad programs are exchange based. That means you stay registered at Dominican and get to keep all of your financial aid and scholarships!

It shouldn’t cost you much more to study abroad, and the units you earn will count toward graduation. Most students take courses that apply to their major, but some students opt to learn a new language or pick up a minor while abroad.

Our direct exchange partners are:

  • DEREE American University of Greece, Athens, Greece
  • ESCEM School of Business and Management, Tours-Poitiers, France
  • Regents University, London
  • Maastricht University, The Netherlands
  • St. Catherine's College, Oxford
  • Universidad Anáhuac Mayab, Merida, Mexico
  • University of Limerick

Note: Space can be limited for some programs, so please contact us early for more information.

If you can’t fit a semester experience into your degree plan, we also offer several summer courses taught overseas by Dominican faculty. For information regarding these courses please email geo@dominican.edu

Using Financial Aid for Study Abroad

Full-time students approved by the Global Education Office (GEO) for participation in the Dominican Study Abroad Program may request the use of their financial aid for study abroad at exchange partner institutions. The following policies apply:

  • Students may use their financial aid and scholarships for study abroad at institutions on the Dominican approved list only
  • Federal, state, and institutional funds may be used during a study abroad semester(s).
  • All financial aid is first applied to the cost of Dominican tuition
  • Remaining aid may be applied to room and board costs at host institution
  • Students should work with a Financial Aid Counselor to determine the amount of aid available for host institution's room and board. The amount of this aid will be communicated to GEO for use in the student's visa application

Non-Dominican Overseas Programs

Non-Dominican overseas Programs are organized, non-exchange, overseas study programs not affiliated with Dominican University of California.

  • Students selecting a non-Dominican overseas program will not be able to use federal, state, or Dominican funds toward the costs of the program
  • Dominican University does not engage in consortium agreements with other higher education institutions for transfer of financial aid
  • Students selecting a non-Dominican overseas program should fill out a planned Leave of Absence Form available in the Registrar's Office
