U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand opens Fall Lecture Series

Kirsten Gillibrand, United States Senator from New York, opened Dominican University of California’s Institute for Leadership Studies (ILS) 2014 Fall Lecture Series in partnership with Book Passage on October 9.

Senator Gillibrand, who filled Hillary Rodham Clinton’s seat in the U.S. Senate, came to Dominican’s Angelico Hall as author of her new book Off the Sidelines: Raise Your Voice, Change the World.

A magna cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College in 1988, Senator Gillibrand went on to receive her law degree from the UCLA School of Law in 1991 and served as a law clerk on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. After working as an attorney in New York City for nearly a decade, Gillibrand served as special counsel to Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Andrew Cuomo during the Clinton administration, then as an attorney before serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing New York's 20th Congressional District, which spans 10 counties in upstate New York.

After President Barack Obama nominated Rodham Clinton as Secretary of State in 2008, New York Governor David Paterson appointed Gillibrand to fill Clinton’s seat in the New York delegation. Gillibrand was first sworn in as United States senator from New York in January 2009. In November 2012 she was elected to her first six-year Senate term with 72 percent of the vote, a New York State record, winning 60 of New York’s 62 counties.

The speaker series, a cooperative effort between Dominican’s Institute for Leadership Studies and Book Passage, features some of the country's leading figures from the worlds of business, politics, entertainment, academia, and literature. The series has entertained and educated thousands of Marin County and San Francisco Bay Area residents.

All lectures are open to the public. Free parking is available on campus in the nearby Conlan Center parking lot at the intersection of Acacia and Grand avenues.
