President Marcy moderates climate change event

Dominican University of California President Mary B. Marcy moderated “Time to Lead on Climate,” an open discussion on November 9 in Angelico Concert Hall on climate change featuring several keynote speakers including U.S. Congressman Jared Huffman.

Congressman Huffman, a Democratic Assistant Whip, was joined on stage by UN Climate Delegate Ken Alex with the Office of Governor Jerry Brown, NextGen Climate Action CEO Josh Fryday, and Susan Stephenson, Executive Director of Interfaith Power and Light. Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org, addressed the near capacity crowd via video.

“Time to Lead on Climate” was sponsored by Organizing for Action, Sustainable San Rafael and about three dozen other Marin County environmental and social action groups.

The event also was part of the Climate Change Educational Initiative series at Dominican this fall. It is a cross-school educational collaboration around the issue of climate change. More than two dozen faculty members from multiple disciplines are participating in the initiative, integrating into their syllabi a common reading, a project on climatic change and required attendance at the climate change events.

Students are learning about the science of climate change, its scientific and social consequences, and the possible public policy options to address the issues.
