Jean-Michel Fonteneau opens 2014-15 Guest Concert Series

Conservatory of Music Cellist Jean-Michel Fonteneau opened the 2014-15 Guest Concert Series on October 12 at Dominican University of California.

The Sunday concerts, sponsored by Dominican’s Department of Music, Dance and Performing Arts, start at 3 p.m. at Angelico Hall, on Acacia Avenue. Free parking is available in the nearby Conlan Center lot off Grand Avenue in San Rafael.

Fonteneau, professor of Cello at the Conservatory of Music, performied on stage with pianist June Choi Oh, Chair of Dominican’s Department of Music, Dance and Performing Arts.

The program, which capped  Family Weekend 2014 at Dominican, featured Beethoven's Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 1 in F Major, Op. 5, No. 1; Grieg's Sonata for Cello and Piano F Minor, Op. 36 and Prokofiev's Sonata for Cello and Piano in C Major, Op. 119.

Fonteneau, founding member of the Ravel String Quartet, has won two prizes at the Evian String Quartet Competition and the first French Grammy award “Les Victoires de la Musique Classique.” He has toured extensively around the world and singlehandedly created the first-ever string quartet residency program in France. Highly sought after, Fonteneau performs as cellist frequently with such renowned artists as Leon Fleisher, Menahem Pressler, Gilbert Kalish, Claude Frank, Peter Frankl, Kim Kashkashian and members of the Amadeus, Juilliard, Pro Arte and Fine Arts quartets.

The Guest Concert Series begins its 14th year. The concerts are free to students under the age of 18 including middle school and elementary school children if accompanied and supervised by an adult.  In addition, community college students with a valid I.D. and music and art teachers in grades K-12 will be admitted free of charge along with Dominican faculty, staff and students with a valid I.D.

Subscription season tickets for the Guest Concert Series are $72 for general admission, $60 for seniors over 60. Single-event tickets, which are only available at the door 30 minutes prior to scheduled performances, are $18 for general admission and $15 for seniors over 60.
