Dominican welcomes Leon Panetta to ILS fall lecture series

Former United States Secretary of Defense and CIA Director Leon Panetta spoke at Dominican University of California’s Institute for Leadership Studies (ILS) Fall Lecture Series in partnership with Book Passage on October 17.

Founder and chairman of the Panetta Institute for Public Policy, Panetta discussed his new book, Worthy Fights: A Memoir of Leadership in War and Peace in Angelico Hall. He appeared on stage in conversation with Dominican President Mary Marcy.

As Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Panetta led the intelligence war that tracked Osama bin Laden. In July 2011 Panetta was named the nation’s 23rd Secretary of Defense by President Obama. He also served as Chief of Staff to President Bill Clinton from 1994-97 and represented California’s 16th (now 17th) Congressional District from 1977-93, rising to House Budget Committee chairman during his final four years in Congress.

Panetta returned to Dominican where in 2001 he and his wife Sylvia received Doctor of Humane Letter degrees from the University. Sylvia Varni Panetta attended Dominican College from 1958-59.

The speaker series, a cooperative effort between Dominican’s Institute for Leadership Studies and Book Passage, features some of the country's leading figures in the field of business, politics, entertainment, academia, and literature. The series has educated and entertained thousands of Marin County and San Francisco Bay Area residents.

All lectures are open to the public. Free parking is available on campus in the nearby Conlan Center parking lot at the intersection of Acacia and Grand avenues.

The Institute for Leadership Studies’ Fall 2014 Leadership Lecture Series is sponsored by Private Ocean, the oldest and largest privately-held wealth management firm in Marin County. Private Ocean’s commitment to community service has been a driving force behind its support of the lecture series, now in its 11th year.
