Dr. Ruth Ramsey named Dean, School of Health and Natural Sciences

Dr. Ruth Ramsey, who joined Dominican in fall 1996 as the founding director of the Occupational Therapy (OT) program, was named Dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences (HNS) on January 4, 2018.

The School includes undergraduate and graduate studies in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Health Science, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Physician Assistant Studies, and Public Health. HNS combines a solid liberal arts foundation with in-depth scientific and professional studies. Students receive a broad range of educational and research experiences, access to a strong network of internships and clinical placements, and meaningful international learning opportunities.

Dr. Ramsey has served as Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy since its inception. She was instrumental in earning accreditation for the OT program with the Accreditation Council of Occupational Therapy Education and has been equally central to maintaining the program’s good standing. She has taken OT at Dominican from an undergraduate program to a graduate program—establishing one of the University’s first BS-MS tracks—and from conception to a well-respected and highly sought-after program that integrates content subject matter and field experience knowledge.

Dr. Ramsey received her EdD from the University of San Francisco. Her recent research focuses on healthy aging for older adults. Dr. Ramsey has presented at both the Occupational Therapy Association of California and the American Occupational Therapy Association, in additional to local agencies that serve the aging.  In 2016 she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Occupational Therapy Association of California, “for exemplary service to the profession of occupational therapy over 30 years.”
