Dr. Ruth Ramsey named Dean of School of Health and Natural Sciences

Dr. Ruth Ramsey has been appointed Dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences (HNS) at Dominican University of California.

 Dr. Ramsey joined Dominican in 1996 to establish the Department of Occupational Therapy. While serving as chair, she developed all facets of the program, created multiple community partnerships, led interdisciplinary student study abroad programs, and served as faculty advisor for more than 100 thesis and capstone projects. Dr. Ramsey led the Department of Occupational Therapy through two successful national accreditation cycles, transitioning it to the graduate level.

“Ruth’s inclusive and collaborative approach to leadership makes her an outstanding choice for this important position,” Dominican President Mary Marcy says. “She was the architect of our exemplary Occupational Therapy program, a nationally recognized program focused on providing students with a rigorous education augmented by out-of-class experiences that ensure students put their learning into action. Her knowledge and experience will be invaluable in working with the faculty, students, and staff throughout the School of Health and Natural Sciences.”

The School of Health and Natural Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate studies in biological sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, clinical laboratory sciences, counseling psychology, ecology and environmental sciences, mathematics, global public health, health science, healthcare leadership, occupational therapy, nursing, and physician assistant studies. Dr. Ramsey has served as interim dean since February 2017.

Dr. Ramsey has served in leadership positions for the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), the Occupational Therapy Association of California, the Psychiatric Occupational Therapy Action Coalition, the Association for Ambulatory Behavioral Healthcare, and the Northern California Association for Partial Hospitalization. She was selected as an AOTA Leadership Fellow in 2008. In 2017, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Occupational Therapy Association of California. Dr. Ramsey has an extensive and impressive scholarly record with numerous publications and presentations. In addition, she practiced clinically in the field of occupational therapy for more than 10 years, specializing in mental health, working at Stanford University Hospital, Mills-Peninsula Hospital, and Seton Medical Center.

Dr. Ramsey holds a doctoral degree in education from the University of San Francisco with an emphasis on curriculum and instruction, a master’s degree in occupational therapy from San Jose State University, and bachelors and master’s degrees in dance from San Francisco State University and the University of California at Los Angeles, respectively.
