Dominican women's soccer hosts North Bay Fire Relief benefit event

Dominican University of California Athletics and the Penguins women's soccer program hosted a North Bay Fire Relief benefit quintuple header featuring other Bay Area college teams on Sunday, April 22, at Kennelly Field in the John Allen Sports Complex on the Dominican campus.

A crowd of more than 300 attended the event. Admission was $7 for the five scrimmages. All proceeds from the gate and profits from food and black "Sonoma County Strong" t-shirt sales are earmarked for the Rebuild Northbay Foundation.

"The event was a tremendous success," said Kelly Coffey, head women's soccer coach for the Penguins who estimates that approximately $1,800 was raised. "There has already been an outpouring of support from the Dominican community and from local soccer clubs,” says Kelly Coffey, head women’s soccer coach for the Penguins. “It should be a great event to raise money, but more importantly to raise awareness and shine the light back on the communities in Sonoma that are still rebuilding and piecing things back together.  At the end of the day we just want to do our part to help.”

Last October, Dominican's Conlan Center served as a Red Cross staging area during the North Bay wildfires. It was during the middle of Dominican’s women’s soccer season and team wanted to find a way it could help in relief efforts.

“Our team had multiple players who were touched by the fire devastation in some way and one student-athlete whose family lost their home,” Coach Coffey says. “Needless to say our team was deeply affected by this event and there was an overwhelming desire to contribute to the relief effort in some way.”

Coffey consulted with Holy Names University women’s soccer coach Mike Herman, who also is a coach for the Santa Rosa United Soccer Club in Sonoma County. They brainstormed the idea to create a fundraiser that included college teams from around the Bay Area. They are discussing making it an annual tradition with each school hosting it on a rotating basis.

Here was the schedule of women's soccer scrimmages on Sunday:
