Dominican receives PacWest Academic Achievement Award again

Dominican’s student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. Since the University’s 2009 transition to NCAA Division II athletics, Dominican has led the Pacific West Conference in academic performance for seven out of the last eight years.

President Mary B. Marcy received the 2016-17 PacWest Academic Achievement Award from PacWest Commissioner Bob Hogue during the University’s Academic Night, February 22.

For the 2016-17 academic year, Dominican student-athletes tied a conference record with a program GPA of 3.44, tying BYU-Hawaii’s mark in 2015-16 when it interrupted a streak of six consecutive Academic Achievement Awards by Dominican. The Penguins have surpassed a program GPA of 3.4 in each of the last four seasons.

Seven of Dominican’s 11 intercollegiate teams scored higher than 3.4 GPA, and all the teams were above a 3.0 GPA.  Women's cross country had the highest GPA with a 3.66 followed closely be men's golf with a 3.6 GPA.

Academic Night began with a reception hosted by Dominican Athletics for faculty, staff, and alumni in the Conlan Center’s Multipurpose Room. The Dominican-Cal Baptist women’s basketball game started at 5:30 p.m.

The Dominican-Cal Baptist men’s basketball game started at 7:30 p.m. Student-athletes from all athletic programs were recognized at special on-court ceremony held during halftime. The ceremony also included the presentation of the PacWest Academic Achievement Award from Commissioner Hogue to President Marcy, and the unfurling of another PacWest Academic Achievement Award banner on the Conlan Center wall.
