Dominican special ed program chair earns special honor

Dr. Billye Brown, Program Chair of the Special Education Department at Dominican, has been selected by the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce Education Committee as one of the recipients of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Education Awards for 2014-2015.

Dr. Brown, who has more than 43 years of experience in education, was recognized for her outstanding contributions to Dominican which include curriculum improvement, instructional excellence, personal involvement and leadership and overall program improvement. She was a faculty member in the School of Liberal Arts and Education at Dominican.

Dr. Brown has a Ph.D. in Special Education from San Francisco State University/University of California, Berkeley. She has been working at Dominican University for 13 years, and has been an enthusiastic participant in the development of courses.

In addition, the San Rafael Chamber of Education Committee commended Dr. Brown as "a wonderful, versatile teacher who has taught across all aspects of special education for over 43 years. Her students trust her attentive, sensitive demeanor in the classroom and her supervision in the field. She supports teacher candidates as they learn of their responsibility to teach all children in their classrooms, and to view diversity as a gift and an asset. Dr. Brown has left an indelible mark on the School of Education and Counseling Psychology  and on the Dominican University of California campus."

says, “We are fortunate to have Billye as a full-time faculty member in the Department of Education. We
are more inclusive, more imaginative and more responsive to the needs of students, faculty and staff
because of her presence among us."

The San Rafael Chamber Education Committee has honored more than 100 deserving recipients with these
awards over the past 17 years of sponsorship. The committee consists of education leaders from the
San Rafael and Dixie School Districts, independent schools, Dominican University and College of Marin.
The business members include representatives from businesses with a long history of supporting
education and individual members passionate about the interests of business and education.
