Dominican classes canceled through Wednesday, November 21

Due to continued unhealthy air quality in Marin County and Northern California, classes and select events scheduled for Monday, November 19, through Wednesday, November 21, were canceled.

Employees were requested to work remotely where feasible. The decision to cancel and close took into account the uncertainty over the air quality during Thanksgiving week - and we wanted to give students and families advance notice about class schedules so travel plans could be made as we head into the Thanksgiving break.

Classes resumed on Monday, November 26.

Dominican administrative offices were Monday through Wednesday. Nov. 19-21, with the exception of essential personnel and services. Faculty and staff should have referred all inquiries regarding what constitutes essential services to their respective division heads. This meant the following:

STUDENTS: Most all administrative services were closed Monday through Wednesday. The residence halls remained open and Caleruega Dining Hall served meals according to scheduled hours. The 33rd Annual Thanksgiving dinner scheduled for Monday 11/19 was canceled, though the dining hall remained open.

STAFF/EMPLOYEES: Employees were requested to work from home and/or remotely where feasible. Please check in with your supervisor. In working remotely, non-exempt employees should be sure to take a lunch break and to work no more than eight hours. All employees, exempt and non-exempt, who were scheduled to work during the closure period, will be paid their regular compensation.

FACULTY: Faculty provided students with a modified syllabus/learning plan and dates of rescheduled exams and due dates either prior to or during to the first class meeting the week of November 26. Instructors may have also elected to hold online classes or online participation activities to make up missed in-person classes.

Dominican has purchased N95 masks for all employees and students (one mask per person). They are available at the security desk in Bertrand Hall.

Please note the following specific information:

ATHLETICS & CONLAN REC CENTER: The Department of Athletics, working closely with the Pacific West Conference Office, determined that the women and men's basketball games in Conlan Center on Tuesday 11/20 to  be played as scheduled. The women's game started at 5:30 p.m. The men's game started at 7:30 p.m Otherwise, the Conlan Center was closed until  Saturday, 11/24.

CALERUEGA AND DINING SERVICES: Caleruega Dining Hall served meals according to scheduled hours. The 33rd Annual Thanksgiving dinner event scheduled for Monday 11/19 was cancelled.

CAMPUS SECURITY: Campus security remained on campus 24/7 and monitored and patrolled campus according to protocols.

LIBRARY: Remained closed until Monday, 11/26.

MAKE SCHOOL (SF Campus): Students were contacted directly by the program.

MASKS: Available from the security desk in Bertrand. The masks are the flat N95s - easier for those with glasses - and need to be molded to the face with the metal piece on top over the bridge of the nose, the bottom pulled under the chin and the sides pressed into the lower cheek and jaw. These are intended to be reused - we ask that individuals please take only one per person.

NURSING: The Chair of Nursing worked with nursing faculty to determine possible clinical cancellations and asked that faculty teaching clinical courses be in close contact with students. Additionally, all nursing students should have planned to check their Dominican email and Moodle sites regularly for updated information.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY: Students scheduled for fieldwork, should have contacted their fieldwork supervisor to confirm whether or not to attend. Students should have used their use their best judgment in conjunction with the supervisor to decide whether to attend or make up the hours on a different day.

OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE (OLLI): All OLLI events scheduled for the week of November 19, including the John Rothmann video and the Sweet Soul Music class taught by Richie Unterberger, were postponed until further notice.

PHYSICIAN’S ASSISTANT PROGRAM: Students who are in the field on clinical rotations should have determined whether they feel compromised traveling to their assigned clinical sites due to the air quality. If that is the case, they were to inform the clinical site of the University’s cancellation of classes and advised that they will not be reporting back until 11/23/18.

RESIDENCE HALLS: The residence halls remained open and operated normally.

STUDENT HEALTH CENTER:  Was CLOSED until Monday 11/26.

OTHER NON-ACADEMIC EVENTS: For other (non-academic) events not listed above, please check with the designated event coordinator for details.
