Campus Ministry hosts 30th annual Thanksgiving dinner on campus

Campus Ministry hosted a crowd of about 500 for the 30th annual Thanksgiving dinner in Caleruega Dining Hall November 21.

“This is usually every student’s favorite meal of the year, not only because the food is good and special but also because it is a time for community and bringing people together,” said Lauren Castro, Senior Director of Student Engagement. “It makes them feel even more that Dominican is their home.”

The dinner, offered in partnership with Epicurean, was open to the Dominican community and neighbors. The event began at 4:30 p.m. with Thanksgiving prayer on Caleruega Plaza. Dinner was served in the dining hall from 5-7:30 p.m.

The Thanksgiving dinner originated 30 years ago as an `Ecumenical Thanksgiving Dinner,’ explains Father Robert Haberman, Director of Campus Ministry.

“When it began, there were about 650 students enrolled at Dominican, so everyone was able to gather in the Shield Room.  Prior to the serving of the dinner `family style,’ there was a prayer service that represented many faiths and traditions.”

The dinner was traditional Thanksgiving fare with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. There were vegan options available upon request.
