Design and create simple machines and then infuse technology to make your machine work for you. We will program a microcontroller and wire small motors to our projects. We will finish the Summer Odyssey Engineering and Design class by building a robot that the kids can take home after Open House on Friday, August 10.

Visual Touch: Computer Graphics and Digital Media Art

Appropriate for learners at all levels of computer knowledge, this project-based class is designed for students who want to express themselves and have fun using computers and digital tools. Students will work with Adobe Creative Suite software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash and Premier) to develop their own creative projects.

Yes…It IS Rocket Science

Entering grades 4-5-6-7
Instructor: Ron Pembleton

How would you like to build and launch a real rocket? From paper airplanes to plastic bottle rockets, you will learn the principles of flight and put them into action. You’ll construct your own solid-fuel rockets from Estes kits and launch them into space. You’ll learn to determine just how high your rocket could go, and the best way to bring it back. This class is always a real blast!

3-D Art

Entering grades 5-6-7
Instructor: Erin Sorensen

Young artists will explore the principles of historic and modern sculpture. Learning from the greats (Michelangelo, Henry Moore, Calder and Goldsworthy), students will sculpt in clay, fabricate with found objects, construct techno art from recycled electronics, and design, engineer, and build fantasy structures based on spatial design and architectural drafting. Taking inspiration from Gaudi, Wright, Gehry and Hadid, participants will take their art to a new dimension.

Artists work in so many different mediums—how do you decide which one is your favorite? The answer is you have to try them all! For two weeks we will transform the classroom into a vibrant art studio as we explore ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking, and collage. We will look at works by famous artists, fill a sketchbook, learn a variety of artist’s tricks and techniques, and use many different tools and materials as you create your Summer Odyssey art portfolio.

The Art of Games and Strategy

Entering grades 6-7-8-9
Instructor: Micah Franks

Join the games renaissance. Strategy has taken a new visage over the last 20 years. Come and practice mathematical planning, probability, and abstract experimentation, while engaging in the social milieu of positive sportsmanship and fun. Follow your imagination into the study of anthropology and history with eurogames like Carcassonne, Settlers of Cataan, Cyclades, and Dominion. Exercise your creative streak with Magic: The Gathering, and Eclipse. Build your own game together with friends, or bring your own favorites to play and analyze.
