I strike the ground with the soles of my feet and life rises up my legs, spreads up my skeleton, takes possession of me, drives away distress and sweetens my memory. The world trembles.

Art and Community Engagement

Spring ’15, Lynn Sondag and Julia van der Ryn co-taught a one-unit class, “Art and Community Engagement” and joined forces with a local initiative called Creative San Rafael. Lead partners include Youth in Arts, the City of San Rafael, the Business Improvement District, Art Works Downtown and the Fortnight Collective.

Lynn designed the class project as part of the Creative Voices, an initial phase of the city arts campaign. Creative Voices is a series of partnered projects all anchored in quotes by visual artists, musicians, writers, and poets who have lived in San Rafael.

About our Creative Voices Project

Dominican students and faculty collaborated with members of San Rafael’s Downtown Streets Team, a current Service-Learning partner. Downtown Streets Team mission is to end homelessness by restoring the dignity and rebuilding the lives of unhoused men and women. Serving the community through work teams prepares members for permanent employment and housing.

Twelve Dominican students joined six members of Downtown Streets Team to create visual interpretations of quotes that express important insights into shared human experience. Our students and the Downtown Streets Team members worked together in groups, each forming a collective visual response to a specific quote in a two-window “diptych”. The final designs may be viewed at 1301 Fourth Street in San Rafael.
