Online Video

Dominican has a special educational account at youtube. This gives us a channel on which we can display videos of up to one hour in length.

The Dominican youtube channel may be used to publish Dominican videos online. Appropriate usage includes: educational videos, videos about the university, and videos of special lectures hosted at Dominican. If you have a video you'd like to upload to the web, and aren't sure if the Dominican channel on youtube is the proper place, contact the Information Technology Department for more information.

We are looking into options for standardizing recording/publishing video at the university. If you are a faculty member interested in using video for recording lectures, please read the section below "How do I upload a video". It includes recommendations for hardware and uploading process.

Who can view uploaded videos?

Videos on our youtube channel are public (everyone in the world can see them.)

Where is our channel?

How do I upload a video?

Option: upload to our YouTube channel

Bring your video on DVD, CD or other portable media storage device to the IT Department. We are located in Alemany Library. We will upload the video to youtube for you. Please also include the following information:

  1. Title (required)
  2. Description (required)
  3. Tags (keywords that describe the video contents) (optional)
  4. Date and Location of video (optional)
  5. By default, we will make the video support embedding (placing on another website), and we will disable comments and voting. If you would like these setting changed for your uploaded video, let us know.
  6. If you are recording a series of lectures you may want to coordinate with IT ahead of time, or you may want to simply upload them to your own YouTube channel. We can't guarantee immediate turn-around for video uploads. Uploading to your own channel will be faster.

Option: upload to your own channel

The Dominican YouTube channel lets us keep all Dominican videos in one spot on YouTube. However, IT needs to upload them all. If you would like quicker turn-around and more direct control, you can simply upload your videos to your own YouTube account, and then post links to the videos on your department's web pages. You can also embed YouTube videos on your department's pages for direct access.

Recommended hardware and process

  1. We recommend the $229 flip video camera
  2. Shoot up to 60 minutes of video
  3. Plug the camera into your PC
  4. Upload directly to YouTube using a simple uploading widget that comes with the camera
  5. Give the students the URL of your uploaded video, post the URL on your department's web pages, or embed the video on your department's web pages.

What video format should I use?

Youtube supports a wide range of video formats such as .WMV, .AVI, .MOV and .MPG. Read more about formats and how youtube works at the youtube help center.
