CURRENT EXHIBITS:

TROVE: selections from the Recology San Francisco Artist in Residence Program

Recology

November 15th, 2018 - February 9th, 2019

The artwork in this exhibition comes from the Recology San Francisco Artist in Residence Program. Founded in 1990, the program provides Bay Area artists with access to discarded materials, a stipend, and a large studio space at the Recology San Francisco Transfer Station and Recycling Center. By supporting artists who work with recycled materials, Recology hopes to encourage people to conserve natural resources, and promote new ways of thinking about art and the environment.

Since 1990, over 140 professional artists and 30 college student artists have completed residencies. The studio is located at Recology San Francisco, a 47-acre facility that includes the trash transfer station, the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, the Organics Annex, the Public Reuse and Recycling Area ("the dump"), and other recycling areas.

During residencies, artists have scavenging privileges in the Public Reuse and Recycling Area, and 24-hour access to a well-equipped art studio. Artists speak to youth and adult tour groups about their work and their experiences of scavenging which exposes them to the results of hyper-consumerism, easy disposability, planned obsolescence, and our general love of “stuff.” The artists, as well as the public who view their work, often leave the experience with changed views about their relationship to materials and their own consumption practices.

At the conclusion of their residency, Recology hosts a three-day public exhibition and reception for the artists featuring the artwork made during their residency. When the residency ends, artists contribute artwork to the program's permanent collection and these pieces continue to be shown in off-site exhibitions that promote recycling and reuse. Exhibition have taken place at the SFO Museum, SF Camerawork, and the Napa Valley Museum, among other venues.

A closing event on 11/8 will feature Dr. Enrique Salmón, speaking in Guzman 112 in conversation with Matt Garica at 2pm. Dr. Salmón, who teaches at Cal State East Bay, is a Rarámuri (Tarahumara), and the author of "Eating the Landscape." He feels indigenous cultural concepts of the natural world are only part of a complex and sophisticated understanding of landscapes and biocultural diversity, and he has dedicated his studies to Ethnobiology, Agroecoclogy, and Ancestral Ecological Knowledge in order to better understand his own and other cultural perceptions of culture, landscapes, and place.

displacement exhibit

These concurrent exhibitions explore themes of displacement–those pushed out from the center of our societies, by forces of violence, economics, racism, or different circumstance. Through these portraits, the humanity of those considered “other” is emphasized. Important contemporary issues such as gentrification, police violence and homelessness are explored.
