Writing Retreat at the Finca

MFA Spain - Finca Buildings

Midway through the program, Creative Writing MFA students may apply for an extended writing retreat at the Finca, a historic brickworks one hour outside Madrid, nestled among acres of olive trees, almond groves, and natural forest. The original buildings date back 250 years and overlook a breathtaking valley rich with thousands of years of vibrant history and culture. Within a half hour of the Finca are four large castles, one the home of the famous El Cid. The Finca offers a perfect backdrop for a period of sustained reflection for writing.

The Richard Ronan Poetry Collection

janronan.jpgDominican is honored to be the home of the archives of distinguished poet Richard Louis Ronan. Ronan brought to his poetry the flavors, intuitions, and instincts of a gay man with a New Jersey Catholic childhood, an award-winning job as a teacher of troubled children in New Jersey, a Masters from University of California at Berkeley, and a life with partner Bill Pittman that was cut short by AIDS.

American Poetry Review editor David Bonanno calls him “one of the most important Post-Stonewall Poets” in this poetry that witnesses lust, human love, identity, survival, and how art can witness and sing against the complex corners of life. Dominican MFA students, faculty, and the public are invited to view Ronan's illustrious collection of works online and on campus. Access the Ronan Poetry Collection.
