U.S. News & World touts Dominican

For the sixth year in a row, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Dominican University of California as one of the top universities in the West. Dominican ranked 38 out of 57 in the top tier, which also includes Santa Clara University, Gonzaga University, California State Polytechnic University – Pomona, Sonoma State University, and San Francisco State University

“Although rankings of this type are only one indication of the quality of our University, we are pleased to be recognized," said Dominican University of California President Joseph R. Fink.

“Our true quality is evident every day here on campus,” he added. “We are strengthened by our faculty, who excel as teachers and scholars; we are strengthened by our students, whose talent, intellect, and enthusiasm for learning inspire us to provide the best possible education; and, we are strengthened by the University’s exceptional legacy and enduring commitment to the Dominican values.”

News of the ranking coincides with the start of Dominican’s 2009-2010 academic year. Dominican will welcome an academically strong and ethnically diverse freshmen class when classes begin Monday, August 24. This year’s freshmen enrollment is up about 10 percent over last year’s figures while transfer enrollment is up about 15 percent.

The 287-strong freshman class, which includes four valedictorians, comes from 20 states and 10 foreign countries, including Italy, Sweden, France, the Philippines, Spain, Taiwan, India, and China. The ethnic makeup of the class includes 65 students of Latino American descent, 57 students of Asian American descent, and 15 students of African American descent. The class earned an overall high school GPA of 3.44.

Dominican also will welcome 70 new transfer students, 153 new graduate students, and 77 new teaching credential students. Overall, the University expects enrollment to reach about 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

Popular undergraduate classes include business, science, nursing, psychology, and the BFA in dance offered in association with Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet.

Popular graduate programs include the MBA in Sustainable Enterprise (Green MBA®) as well as the MS in Counseling Psychology, the MS in Occupational Therapy, and the one-year-old MS in Biological Science offered in association with the Buck Institute for Age Research.
