Adjunct Faculty, Public Health

The Global Public Health Program at Dominican University of California has an open adjunct position to teach courses in the Global Public Health undergraduate degree program, and to coordinate the Global Public Health internship program, to begin Spring 2019. The internship is essential to the Global Public Health Program as it provides students with a complete, meaningful, community-engaged work experience to enhance and expand their learning and professional development. The Internship Coordinator performs outreach and site development for Global Public Health internships, serves as the primary liaison with community agencies, and supports programmatic goals through didactic and community-focused training. Additionally, the internship coordinator maintains the Global Public Health Program’s alignment with the Dominican Experience by integrating community involvement for the student and the institution. Course descriptions for the courses associated with the internship program are listed below.

Responsibilities

  • Serving as the faculty of record for all Global Public Health internships by overseeing and providing students with academic and co-curricular (professional) support throughout the internship
  • Initiating and maintaining relationships with companies and organizations, as well as the alumni network, to build a dynamic internship program, both domestic and global.
  • Serving as the primary contact for students, faculty, staff, alumni and employers regarding internship and career development.
  • Coordinating all paperwork associated with the internship program, including liaising with the Dominican internship office and Career Services Manager through the maintenance of records and data on student appointments, employer contacts, and presentations for use in school and university reports. 
  • Providing final grades to Global Public Health interns at the close of each semester.

 

Course descriptions

  • Global Public Health internship: Students become knowledgeable about a public health provider’s role and workplace dynamics. Internship opportunities include: county public health departments, local human service agencies, healthcare organizations, non-profits, and various community sites. Course may be taken for 1-3 units, 1 unit equals 45 hours. Course may be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: Consent of the GPH Internship Coordinator or Program Director; co-enrollment with Professional Development Seminar required for first unit.
  • Professional Development Seminar: This course will develop students’ professional competencies by guiding resume writing, practicing interview skills, articulating career goals, and analyzing workplace dynamics. Attention will be paid to modeling interpersonal skills, self-reflection, and professionalism - 1 lecture hour.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree required, in public health, health science, or related field
  • Experience in teaching and Instruction
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Resourceful and able to problem-solve student issues and topics (academic/career/personal/professional) within a student-centered approach
  • Education and experience to qualify for an adjunct faculty position in Global Public Health are also required.
  • The ability to work collaboratively, professionally, and creatively with others is essential.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree
  • Experience in teaching at the undergraduate level
  • Connections or familiarity with local health-related community partners
  • Familiarity with Moodle is a plus

  • Teaching rank and compensation depend on credentials and prior experience.
  • Dates of teaching for the Spring 2019 semester are approximately January 18, 2019 to May 7, 2019.
