Large crowd hears Salman Rushdie speak at Dominican

Salman Rushdie, bestselling author of "Midnight’s Children" and "The Satanic Verses," addressed an appreciative crowd of close to 700 in Angelico Hall on September 25 in the 2012 Institute for Leadership Studies’ Fall Lecture Series at Dominican University of California.

The series is a cooperative effort between Dominican’s ILS and independent book store Book Passage. Each year, theSalman Rushdie Leadership Lecture Series features some of the country's leading figures from the world of business, politics, entertainment, academia, and literature.

The 2012 Fall Lecture Series will continue on November 14 with the Food Network’s Ina Garten and on November 30 with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham.

All lectures are open to the public. Lectures begin at 7 p.m. in Angelico Hall. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Rushdie discussed his new memoir, Joseph Anton. about his years spent in hiding after the Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa against him, sentencing Rushdie to death because his novel The Satanic Verses was deemed “against Islam, the Prophet and the Qu’ran.” Rushdie has received numerous literary honors, including The Man Booker Prize for Midnight’s Children, which was recently made into a film by Deepa Mehta, scheduled for release this year.

The ILS Fall 2012 Leadership Lecture Series is sponsored by Private Ocean, the Marin-based wealth management company. For more information on the ILS Fall Lecture Series, call 415-485-3202, visit www.dominican.edu/LLS or email ILS@dominican.edu.
