The 5-foot-5, 145-pound senior midfielder, who has scored 25 goals in his Dominican career, received the most votes from PacWest coaches in a poll conducted earlier this month. A product of Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, Guevara twice has been named Dominican Male Student-Athlete of the Year at the University.
“I'm happy for Pedro that the other coaches in the Pac West have given him this accolade,” said Jon Delano, Director of Soccer at Dominican. “Pedro has been a constant for our program and I look forward to watching him continue to improve during his senior season.”
“It's a great honor and this will motivate me to work even harder to be the best that I can be, but above all to help our team — which has a lot of potential — be the best that it can be,” Guevara said.
Guevara’s teammate, sophomore defender Sam Vella (Serra HS/Belmont), also was selected to the PacWest Preseason All-Conference team. The Penguins open 2011 regular-season play on September 1 against San
Francisco State at Cal State East Bay in Hayward. Game time is 5 p.m.
Last season, Guevara started and played in all 18 games for Dominican, scoring eight goals, fourth most the PacWest. He added four assists and compiled 20 points, all team highs. He scored two game-winning goals and two game-tieing goals for the Penguins.
Guevara, an Occupational Therapy major, also was named to the PacWest Academic All-Conference team for the second year in a row.
