Stem Cell Research
- In an opinion article appearing in the Marin Independent Journal, Dr. Sibdas Ghosh, chair of the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, discussed some of the stem cell research underway at Dominican. Big History
- In a review of Dr. Cynthia Stokes Brown's book Big History: From the Big Bang to the Present, the Toronto Star notes: "You'll be amazed by the lucidity and
simplicity with which Brown weaves this really, really grand narrative
– the physics of the universe, the geology of the Earth, the biology of

compelling story." Dr. Brown is professor emerita of education at Dominican.

Imposter Phenomenon
- Psychology professor Dr. Gail Matthews talks with The Chronicle of Higher Education about her research on the impostor phenomenon. A study conducted several years ago by Dr. Matthews and colleagues found that about 70 percent of people from all walks of life — men
and women — have felt like impostors for at least some part of their
careers.
Alumna Triumphs in Local Elections
- Elizabeth Williamson (Political Science, Class of 2007) was the campaign manager for the winning candidate in a hotly contested local election. Williamson is pictured in the Marin Independent Journal.
Master's Degree in Age Research
- A proposed master's program in age research was the subject of news articles in both the Marin Independent Journal and the North Bay Business Journal. Dominican currently is talking with the Buck Institute for Age Research about offering this first-of-its-kind program.

Little Rock Nine
- Melba Beals, chair of the Department of Communications, talks with the San Jose Mercury News about her experiences as a member of the Little Rock Nine, the nine African-American teenagers who 50 years ago advanced the civil rights movement with the integration of Little Rock Central High School. The article included interviews with Dominican's President Joseph R. Fink; Dr. Sibdas Ghosh, chair of the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics; stem cell researcher Dr. Mohammed El Majdoubi; breast cancer researcher Dr. Maggie Louie; and Dominican graduate Rocky Chavez, who currently is attending medical school at UC San Diego.

Stem Cell Research
- Dominican scientist Dr. Mohammed El Majdoubi is a co-principal investigator on a $4.1 million grant awarded to The Buck Institute for Age Research in Novato to establish a research center where scientists throughout the region can learn how to culture and use human embryonic stem cells. The Buck Institute is one of 17 institutions receiving grants from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to finance construction of shared research laboratories, according to articles in the San Francisco Business Times and the Marin Independent Journal.

Dominican's Melba Beals Part of Coin Commemoration
- The United States Mint has issued a Little Rock Central High School Desegregation silver dollar to mark the 50 anniversary of the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School, notes the Marin Independent Journal. Melba Beals, chair of the Department of Communications, is a member of the Little Rock Nine.
Chemicals in Children's Products
- Dr. Diara Spain, assistant professor of biology in the Department of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, wrote an article about toxic chemicals in children’s bath products that was printed in the Marin Independent Journal.
Marin's Foster-Care System
- As part of a series on the foster-care system, the Marin Independent Journal interviewed Marjorie Delgadillo - described in the article as a "poster child for Marin's foster-care system." Delgadillo graduated from Dominican in Spring 2007 with a degree in humanities. She now works as a bilingual resource adviser for the Marin Childcare Council and is planning to take the law school admissions test in the fall.
Environmental Finance Center
- Supported by a $222,222 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Environmental Finance Center for EPA Region 9 relocates to Dominican, reports the Marin Independent Journal.

Academy of Sciences
- Cooper Scollan, a 2005 graduate of Dominican, is managing the green roof project for the new California Academy of Sciences building in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Childhood Obesity
- The Marin Independent Journal reports that Lynne LoPresto, who teaches nutrition in Dominican's Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, has secured a $100,000 grant from the California State Library to create the Library Nutrition Collection. The collection, housed at South Novato Library, will serve as a resource to local schools.
Marin Women's Hall of Fame
- Dr. Francoise Lepage, assistant to the president for special projects at Dominican University, is among the five women elected to the Marin Women's Hall of Fame. Dr. Lepage founded the university's international studies program in the 1980s and the Pacific Rim graduate business program in 1986. Dr. Lepage also ran a program for Marin school teachers to integrate global awareness into school curricula, and launched a public lecture series that brings notable figures to the Dominican campus. A Marin Independent Journal editorial congratulates the five honorees.

Breast Cancer Research
- The Marin Independent Journal reported that Dominican breast cancer researcher Dr. Maggie Louie recently was awarded a $30,000 grant from Chicago-based Wendy Will Case Cancer Fund to support Dr. Louie’s research into the role that environmental contaminants play in the spread of breast cancer.

- ABC news, MSNBC, the Boston Globe, Scientific American, and numerous daily newspapers in Asia, Europe, and Australia were among the news outlets carrying a Reuters story about nursing chair Dr. Luanne Linnard-Palmer's book examining religious and cultural influences on healthcare treatment was featured in a recent Reuters news article.
