Dominican coach Brooks inducted into USF Hall of Fame

San Francisco, CA - From Derby, England fullback John Brooks was considered the biggest surprise for the Hilltoppers when as a frosh on the ‘76 squad he helped lead the team to its second consecutive NCAA title.
While his incredible defensive play throughout the season was instrumental in the Dons success, he could also hit the back of the nets. In a win against Stanford, he recorded his first goal of the year. He then went on to score on a pass from Tony Gray in the 4-1 win over Brigham Young. He also recorded tallies in a 4-0 win over US International and a 5-0 shutout against Santa Clara.
Perhaps his biggest game in the regular season was the Far Western 5-0 title win against San Jose, where his defense along with fellow Dons Misak Pirinjian and Jan Erick Skaug shut off the Spartan attack allowing for only 5 shots on goal. Along the way, he scored two unassisted goals, a strike shot from the left corner and a 15-yard straightway. Although Brooks credited his teammates for the win, it was his outstanding play that was cited for neutralizing the nation’s leading scorer. Following the game, Coach Steve Negoesco said, “Brooks is a good freshman player. He beats you to the ball and is shaping up as outstanding defensive man.”
Coach Negoesco’s comment proved to be an understatement in post-season play when Brooks turned out to be the key to the USF title defense as the 6’2” freshman was called on to contain key players throughout the NCAA tournament. His defense negated the stars of every USF opponent. In the semi-final game, he not only helped keep Clemson scoreless as he isolated their scoring ace, but he also recorded the winning goal when he took a pass from Andy Atuegbu. With Atuegbu and Brooks on the run, the Clemson defense was split down the middle. The goalie charged the ball as Brooks entered the penalty area, but Brooks was able to fire the ball under the diving goalie giving USF the win 1-0. In the title game against Indiana, he was assigned to defend scoring leader DiBernardo. He turned in the same type of brilliant shutout that he had against the Spartans and Clemson as USF won the NCAA title.
In 1977, his last year on the Hilltop, defensive gladiator John Brooks
was a unanimous choice for All –Conference first team.
Turning pro his senior year, Brooks played professionally for 5 years, including stints with Sacramento, the San Francisco Gales and Los Angeles Lazers. While an injury forced him to leave the pros, he
stills plays in the San Francisco soccer league.
For over 11 years, John Brooks has served as head soccer coach at Dominican University where he has recorded over 150 wins. In 2005, his team posted an undefeated conference record winning the California Pacific Championship. Eight of his players were named to the All-Conference team, and he was honored as Coach of the Year for the third time.
