Dominican men poised for 2007-2008 season
San Rafael, Calif. — The 2007-2008 Dominican University of California men’s basketball team has the makings to be a dominant force in the California Pacific Conference and earn a fifth conference championship and are picked by the
Victory Sports Network as the #14 team in the country. Head coach
Bret Tovani has added former Dominican standout
John Parker ’03 to his coaching staff. Assistants
Lee Chretien,
Brandon Davis, and J
eff Stanley
have all returned to help the Penguins this season.
The Penguins faltered in 2006-2007, turning in a 12-17 record, the program’s first losing season in seven seasons. Despite losing five players from that squad, only one of which was to graduation, the Penguins are banking on a combination of veteran players, junior college transfers, and young but mature underclassmen to restore order this season.
Among the top returners this season are Marin native
Pat Fahy, who earned the NAIA’s National Player of the Week honor and was named Cal Pac Newcomer of the Year last season; the team’s lone four-year letterman, senior guard
Nate Rogoff; sophomore point guard
Alastair Flack, who was plagued by injuries in his freshman campaign; and
Ari Iventosch, who averaged 9.3 points per game last season.
Other returning players who will be sure to contribute are senior
Scott Shelton, junior forwards
Kevin Krueger and
Chris Souza, junior center
Ryan Trammel, and senior big man
Todd Bergman.
The season also ushers in some unfamiliar faces that will surely be recognizable by the season’s end. Six-foot-five sophomore
Adam Chavis and six-foot-four
Phil Havlicek give the Penguins some much needed height and an inside presence. Chavis’ older brother,
Ray Chavis, transferred to Dominican last year but took the season off to focus on school. The former Chabot College standout will add another outside shooting threat to Fahy’s presence behind the arc. There’s also another Fahy at Dominican - Pat’s brother
Nick Fahy, a six-foot guard. Tovani has added depth with the addition of three other guards in addition to Chavis and Fahy.
Adrian Valderrama, a product of De Anza College, will add depth at the point guard position alongside Flack and Rogoff. Guards
Matt Ferreira, who averaged 8.4 points per game last season at the College of the Siskiyous, and
Michael Wells, who redshirted at Humboldt State University last season, will look to make significant contributions at the shooting guard position. The lone true freshman on the 2007-2008 squad is guard
Brett Poncia, a product of Liberty Christian High School in Redding, CA.
All in all, the 2007-2008 season looks to be another exciting and winning year of Dominican Basketball. The Penguins kick off the season the same way as last season, at Hope International University in Fullerton. The game is set for November 2 at 5:30 p.m. While in Southern California, Dominican will also face Cal Baptist University on November 3. They will face the Lancers, who Dominican edged 62-61 last season, at 7:30 p.m.
