Dominican Women earn Cal Pac Honors
It was announced today that Dominican University of California's Gabby Pecora and Brooke Swingle have been named to the California Pacific Conference 2008 All-Conference First Team.
Pecora, last season's Player of the Year, played in 72 games and averaged 3.19 kills per game, .46 aces per game, and 3.26 digs per game.
Swingle, last season's Freshman of the Year, played in 63 games averaged 7.79 assists per game with less than one assist error per game. She also averaged 2.6 digs per game.
Senior Amanda Wagner earned second team honors and senior Lorel Grande garnered an Honorable Mention.

Lady Penguins finish season with win over Holy Names
Oakland, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team finished the 2008 season with a thrilling 3-2 victory over rival Holy Names on Saturday. Junior Gabby Pecora led Dominican with 9 kills while senior Lorel Grande added 8. Sophomore setter Brooke Swingle added 31 assists in the victory as Dominican finishes out the season with an 11-3 conference record.

Senior Night : Wagner leads Women's Volleyball past PUC
In the final home matches of their collegiate careers, Seniors Amanda Wagner, Cristy Roberts and Aly Pence gave the Lady Penguins a final win on Saturday evening, defeating Pacific Union in three games (25-15, 25-16, 25-14).
Wagner had a team-high 14 point with seven kills, six service aces and a block, to go along with 8 digs. Roberts had four kills, three aces and six digs. Pence led the team in digs with 10, also contributing six kills.
The team's record now stands at 9-10 with a 9-3 record in conference play. They'll finish their season on the road this week at Cal State East Bay, Mills and Holy Names.

Lady Penguins get back on track in Women's Volleyball; Pecora Player-of-the-Week
The Dominican Lady Penguins rebounded from two conference losses last week to once again tie for second place in the Cal Pac with wins over Simpson and William-Jessup University this past weekend.
Junior Outside Hitter Gabby Pecora had 27 kills and 18 digs and Lorel Grande had 14 kills and 11 digs as Women's Volleyball defeated both visiting opponents in three straight games. Sophomore Setter Brooke Swingle returned from an injury with 8.3 assists per game and a team leading nine service aces. Pecora was named Conference Player of the Week for her performance.
The team's conference record now stands at 8-3 and 8-10 overall with four matches left on the season. The team will host its final home match of the season this Saturday when it hosts Pacific Union College at the Conlan Center. That match will begin at 7:30 p.m. The team's graduating seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony by coaches, teammates, family and friends as part of Senior Night.

Women's Volleyball stumbles without Swingle
The Dominican Women's Volleyball team was in the midst of their biggest match of the season on Friday night at Menlo College when they suffered their greatest loss. Sophomore Setter and last week's Conference Player of the Week Brooke Swingle went down with an injury in the third game, severely damaging the team's hopes of a win. The Lady Penguins would battle on, but ultimately fell short against the Lady Oaks, losing 23-25, 26-24, 21-25, 20-25. The team's troubles continued the following night at Bethany, losing in three games, 23-25, 24-26, 21-25.
For the week, Junior Outside Hitter Gabby Pecora continued to play well with a 3.71 kills/game average and 4.43 digs. Junior Outside Hitter Lorel Grande was second in kills with 1.71. Freshman Mercedes Smith led the team in digs with 5.14. Freshman Outside Hitter Cayla Morphew had seven blocks.
The team's record now stands at 6-9 with a 6-3 record in conference play. They have three home matches this week against Academy of Art (Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.), Simpson University (Friday at 7:00 p.m.) and William-Jessup University (Saturday at 7:00 p.m.).

Pecora dominates as Women's Volleyball beats Holy Names; Mills
The Dominican Women's Volleyball team took sole possesion of second place in the Cal Pac Conference standings this past weekend, with impressive wins against Holy Names University and Mills College. On Friday, the team played perhaps its biggest match of the season before a huge crowd at the Conlan Center, winning three games to two in a thriller. They'd follow that up on Saturday night again at Conlan, defeating Mills in three games.
Junior Outside Hitter Gabby Pecora was dominant with 22 kills against Holy Names and 34 kills overall. She also had 28 digs, two blocks and two service aces. Several times the Lady Penguins were in danger of losing the match to the Lady Hawks, only to be rallied by another play by Pecora.
Sophomore Setter Brooke Swingle was tremendous in both matches, averaging 10 assists per game to go along with four blocks and 21 digs. Senior Right-side Hitter Amanda Wagner and Freshman Outside Hitter Cayla Morphew each had 19 kills for the week. Freshman Libero Mercedes Smith led the team with 36 digs.
The team's record now stands at 6-7 with a 6-1 record in conference play. They'll hit the road next weekend as they play a critical match at Menlo College on Friday night. The Lady Penguins sole conference loss this season came against the Lady Oaks. They'll play at Bethany University on Saturday evening.

Lady Penguins stumble; rebound against Pacific Union in Women's Volleyball
The Dominican Women's Volleyball team faced off against Academy of Art of San Francisco this past Thursday, in a preview of future Pac West Conference rivals. The Lady Penguins lost in three hotly contested games, but showed enough to guarantee a closely watched rivalry for years to come. The team fell short the following night at UC Santa Cruz, losing in four games to the Lady Banana Slugs. But as always, they would bounce back, winning at Pacific Union in three straight games on Saturday night.
Junior Outside Hitter Gabby Pecora led the team with 27 kills, 34 digs and five service aces. Senior Outside Hitter Amanda Wagner had 20 kills and seven service aces. Sophomore Setter Brooke Swingle had 69 assists and 30 digs. Junior Outside Hitter Lorel Grande had 20 kills, 13 digs and six blocks. Senior Libero Aly Pence had 18 digs despite playing in only two matches.
The team's record now stands at 4-7 with a 4-1 record in conference play. Their next two matches both come at home as they host Holy Names University on Friday and Mills College on Saturday. Both matches will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Women's Volleyball : Lady Penguins go 2-1
The Dominican Women's Volleyball team continued to improve this past week. Despite a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-21) loss to NCAA powerhouse Cal State East Bay at home last Wednesday, the team quickly rebounded on the road with a 3-1 win at Simpson University on Thursday (25-13, 25-15, 23-25, 25-15) followed by a gut-check come-from-behind 3-2 win at William-Jessup University on Friday (23-25, 24-26, 25-13, 25-20, 15-7).
For the week, Sophomore Setter Brooke Swingle averaged 8.0 assists per game and had 3.30 digs/game. Of Dominican's 49 kills against William-Jessup, 41 were off of Swingle's sets. Junior Outside Hitter Gabby Pecora continued to tear up opposing defenses as she averaged a team-leading 3.75 kills/game and a .272 kill percentage. Pecora also led the team in total service aces with 7, and was second in Digs with 3.75/game. Junior Outside Hitter Lorel Grande had 2.42 kills/game and 2.75 digs/game. Senior Team Captain Amanda Wagner had 1.27 kills/game and 1.27 digs/game. Grande and Wagner each had five services aces. Freshman Outside Hitter Cayla Morphew led the team with seven total blocks and 1.33 digs/game.
The team's record now stands at 3-5 with a 3-1 record in conference play. The team is in for another marathon week as they hit the road for matches at Academy of Art, UC Santa Cruz and Pacific Union College. Their next home match comes next Friday, October 10th as they host Holy Names University in a 7:00 p.m. match.

Women's Volleyball starts the season
Intercollegiate competition returned to the Conlan Gym for the first time this year as the Lady Penguins of Women's Volleyball began their Cal Pac Conference schedule.
Dominican won their home opener on Thursday in an impressive 3-0 win over rival Bethany University, 25-23, 25-18, 25-15. They fell short, however, against Menlo College on Saturday night. After winning the first game of the match 25-23, they lost a thrilling Game 2, 26-28 and couldn't recover, losing the third and fourth games, 15-25, and 16-25.
For the week, Junior Outside Hitter and last year's Conference MVP Gabby Pecora averaged 1.86 kills/game and led the team in total service aces with 8. Pecora also led the team on defense with 3.0 digs per game. Junior Outside Hitter Lorel Grande also played well for the Lady Penguins, tying for the team lead in kills (2.57/game) and coming in second for hitting percentage (.213), service aces (5) and digs (2.86/game). Senior Outside Hitter Amanda Wagner led the team in hitting percentage (.282) and shared the lead in kills (2.57/game). Sophomore Setter Brooke Swingle averaged 7.29 assists per game.
The team's record now stands at 1-4 with a 1-1 record in conference play. They look to get back on track this Wednesday as they host Cal State East Bay at the Conlan Center Gym. That match will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Women's Volleyball starts the season
The Dominican Women's Volleyball team opened the season 0-3 at the Westmont Invitational in Santa Barbara this past weekend.
Facing tough competition from Cal Baptist (the #2 team in the nation), San Francisco State and the host Warriors of Westmont College, the Lady Penguins hit only .027 as a team. Junior Gabby Pecora - last year's Cal Pac Conference MVP - led the team with 21 kills in and a .107 attack average. Pecora also led the team with 2.78 digs per game. Senior Amanda Wagner and Junior Lorel Grande also played well with 14 kills a piece over the three matches, and accounting for nearly half of the team's blocks. Sophomore Setter Brooke Swingle averaged 5.67 assists per game.
Despite the tough start, the team is looking forward to Conference play, where they hope to repeat as Cal Pac Champions in their final season in the conference. Their next match will serve as both their home and conference opener as they host Bethany University on Thursday, Sept. 18th at the Conlan Center. The match will begin at 7:00 pm.
