School of Business and Leadership

Welcome to the School of Business and Leadership.

The School of Business and Leadership offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs to meet the diverse educational needs and professional goals of students.

Our  curriculum  has at its core an understanding that we live in an international and diverse world. Our San Francisco Bay Area location provides ready access to a thriving business community of global corporations, institutions, and markets. Our graduates are working in industries leading the new business economy, from biotechnology and the life sciences to media and communications.

Small class size allows students to interact with their peers and faculty at an intensive level. Faculty emphasize academic rigor with real world relevance; placing a priority on strong teaching and providing opportunities for students to discuss their assignments and research.

Students learn to think independently, work collaboratively, and develop leadership and citizenship skills that are grounded on an understanding and acceptance of the diverse world in which they live and work.

By leveraging the combined talents of faculty, students, alumni, and strategic initiatives and partnerships, the School provides a solid foundation for success.

Mission, Vision, and Core Values:

The School of Business and Leadership is committed to educating students to be socially responsible leaders of sustainable organizations that make a positive difference in the world. The School cultivates learners with a global perspective to lead sustainable organizations, incorporating the Dominican ideals of reflection, study, community, and service in support of social justice. We believe that sustainable organizations result from ethical and socially responsible leadership, ecologically sustainable entrepreneurship or business practices, and a global mindset.

HISTORY

The business programs at Dominican University of California began in 1975 as an interdisciplinary collaborative between the Politics and International Studies Department and other academic departments.  In 1983, the Buck Fund provided funding for research, giving rise to the Pacific Basin Studies (PBS) Program.  In 1986, the PBS Program initiated the MA in International Economics and Political Risk Assessment, which became the forerunner of Dominican’s MBA Program.  For the next 20 years, business programs underwent a period of growth, consolidation, and repositioning.  In the spring of 2006, the Dominican Board of Trustees approved the creation of a new School of Business and Leadership, effective the 2006/07 academic year.  A new dean was hired in July 2007 with the objective of increasing the profile of the School, raising funds, developing strategic international initiatives, and leading the School to accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International).

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND OFFERINGS

Educational programs include the Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration degree (with concentrations in accounting, finance, international business, management, and marketing) and the Master of Business Administration (with majors in global management, strategic leadership, and sustainable enterprise).  The School also offers the Bachelor of Arts in Management for adult, reentry students and, in collaboration with the California Management Institute, the Master of Arts in Management degree.  Other educational programs include undergraduate minors in business administration, leadership studies, and sports management.  The School’s Green MBA® Program, created in 2002, is the first graduate program in sustainable enterprise in the United States.

FACULTY AND STUDENTS

The School has a total of 440 business students, consisting of 247 undergraduate students (61% full-time) and 193 graduate students.  These include 62 students from overseas, who account for most (78%) international students at Dominican.  About one out of four (22%) Dominican students is a business student.  Providing quality instruction to these students is a team of 10 full-time and 33 part-time faculty members.  Nearly all faculty members have post-graduate degrees, with 22 holding the doctorate.

INITIATIVES AND CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE

The School houses three interdisciplinary centers of excellence: the Institute for Leadership Studies, which is known for its Leadership Lecture Series and student leadership development programs; the Environmental Finance Center Region 9 (EFC9), a federally funded center to support green business initiatives; and the new Center for Sustainability, which is a consortium to coordinate University activities aimed at building sustainable organizations and communities.  Starting the 2008/09 academic year, the School will offer a non-degree Certificate in Sustainable Enterprise program to increase awareness of environmental sustainability and green business practices among MBA degree-holders.

PARTNERSHIPS

The School has educational partnerships with the California Management Institute (CMI), ESCEM School of Business and Management (France), American Business School in Paris, University College Dublin of the National University of Ireland, and Huron University (UK).  The School is currently negotiating partnerships with business schools in Southeast Asia and is interested in entering into partnerships with business schools in Brazil, Russia, India, and China as well.  The School welcomes individuals and organizations who are committed to promoting sustainability, ethical leadership, and globalization to participate as educational and funding partners.
