History and Traditions

When the Dominican sisters moved their motherhouse from Benicia to San Rafael in 1889,  their goal was to found a college, so they obtained the charter for it in 1890. However, they operated only Dominican Convent Upper and Lower Schools (now San Domenico School in San Anselmo) until 1915.  In 1915 Dominican began to operate as a junior college, and in 1917 became a four-year institution. The graduate school was initiated in 1950.
