Student Research at Academic Conferences

Dominican University of California students have been invited to present their research at two major academic conferences. Dominican learned this week that 20 abstracts have been accepted for presentation at the 20th National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), which will be held April 6 through April 8 at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

Dominican students also have been invited to present their work at the 13th Ocean Sciences Meeting, which will be held February 20 through February 25 in Honolulu.

Supporting undergraduate research has been a priority at Dominican since the institution moved from college to university status in 2000. “While the concept of undergraduate research is not new to Dominican University of California, in recent years this research has become a highly visible aspect of our University,” says Dr. Kenneth J. Porada, Dominican’s provost and vice president for academic affairs.

More than 60 students from a variety of departments — including the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Institute for Leadership Studies, the Department of Humanities, and the Department of Psychology — were involved with the 20 Dominican abstracts accepted for presentation at NCUR 2006. The research includes studies into HIV, Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, biodiversity, and obesity. (The abstracts are listed below).

Next year Dominican will serve as host to NCUR 2007. More than 2,000 students and faculty are expected to attend this three-day event, with sessions held both on the Dominican campus and at the Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium.

The Ocean Sciences Meeting is held in association with the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), The Oceanography Society (TOS), and the Estuarine Research Foundation (ERF).

Dominican students Alma Martinez, Natalie Plaza, Monika Alas, Bridget Gengler, Sandra O'Dell, Ryan Trammel, and Rosanna Hanson worked with their faculty supervisor Dr. Vania Coelho, assistant professor in the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, on research into the algal epifaunal communities in windward park and non-park areas in Little Cayman, Cayman Islands. Martinez, Plaza, and Hanson will join Dr. Coelho in presenting the paper at the Ocean Sciences Meeting. Martinez received an ASLO minority scholarship to attend the meeting.

In addition, Dr. Coelho will present her research into the status of coral reefs in Little Cayman in 2005, as well as a research project examining coral reef health and community structure over the past six years in Little Cayman. Dr. Coelho is chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Central Caribbean Marine Institute. Each summer she leads a research internship project that explores the structure and diversity of the coral reefs around Little Cayman.

Before joining Dominican’s faculty in 2002, Dr. Coelho held an associate research scientist position at Columbia University, where she was involved with the Biosphere II Project. She also conducted doctorate research while working as a visiting scientist at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.
