Dominican Increases Merit Transfer Scholarships

Dominican University of California has increased scholarship levels for undergraduate students transferring to the University beginning fall 2006.

The Transfer Scholarship program, which began in 2002, awards five categories of scholarships with levels ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 per year.

Merit scholarships for new transfer students have increased by $1,000 in two out of five categories. About 97 percent of the almost 175 transfer students entering Dominican each year receive merit scholarships.

"Transfer students are an integral part of campus life at Dominican,” says Dr. David Behrs, Vice President of Student Life and Enrollment Management. “The increase in the merit transfer scholarship program reflects the University's commitment to making a quality four-year education accessible to all students."

Merit scholarships are awarded based solely on transferable Grade Point Average (GPA). Transfer students with a GPA of 4.00 or higher are eligible for Trustee Scholarships, which award up to $10,000 per student. Those with a GPA of 3.50 to 3.99 are eligible for Presidential Scholarships, which award up to $7,500 per student.  Students with a GPA of 3.00 to 3.49 are eligible for Dean’s Scholarships, which award up to $6,000 per student (a $1,000 increase from 2005-2006 levels). Students with a GPA of 2.50 to 2.99 are eligible for Dominican Scholarships, which award up to $5,000 (a $1,000 increase from 2005-2006 levels). Students with a GPA of 2.00 to 2.49 are eligible for Guzman Scholarships, which award up to $2,500.

Dominican’s 2005-2006 undergraduate tuition is $25,950. In addition to the merit scholarships, students also may qualify for need-based financial aid.

Transfer students are those with 13 or more transferable units.  Dominican’s five biggest transfer majors are nursing, health sciences (pre-occupational therapy), biology/pre-med, psychology, and business. All students are automatically considered for academic scholarships when they are reviewed for admission, with no separate application required. Students must be degree seeking and taking a full-time academic load of 12 or more units on the San Rafael campus. The transfer scholarships are renewable if renewalcriteria is maintained. International students are not eligible for transfer scholarships.

Dominican’s top five feeders for transfer students are College of Marin, City College of San Francisco, Santa Rosa Junior College, Diablo Valley College, Skyline College, and Solano Community College.
