International Musicians to Perform in 2007-2008 Guest Concert Series
The popular Guest Concert Series celebrates its seventh season with an impressive selection of chamber performances by musicians of international standing, including violinist Axel Strauss, the Tilden Trio, the Alexander String Quartet, tenor opera singer Thomas Glenn, and musicians from the San Francisco Symphony.
The series begins Sunday, September 23 at 3 p.m. with a violin recital
by Axel Strauss. Strauss, joined by pianist Jeffrey Sykes, will play selections
by Leclair, Fauré, Adams, and Mendelssohn. Strauss, the winner of the 1998
Naumburg Violin Award, made his American debut at the Library of Congress in Washington DC.
His first of many New York concerts was
presented at the Lincoln
Center’s Alice Tully Hall
in 1998. He has appeared as soloist with
numerous orchestras, including the Hamburg Symphony, the Seoul Philharmonic,
the Shanghai Symphony, the Utah Symphony, the New York Chamber Symphony, and
the Budapest Philharmonic. He frequently
performs at music festivals, including the Moab Music Festival in Utah, the International
Music Academy
and Festival in Seoul in Korea, and the Kammermusiktage Mettlach in Germany.
On Sunday, November
11 at 3 p.m. the Tilden Trio will perform selections by Beethoven,
Handel-Halvorsen, Strauss, and Arensky. The Tilden Trio was formed in 2004 by
Juilliard schoolmates Sarn Oliver (first violin, San Francisco Symphony),
Peter Wyrick (associate principal cello, San Francisco Symphony) and June Choi
Oh (faculty, Dominican University of California)
after collaborating for decades in various ensembles, starting in the
pre-college days.
On Sunday, January 27 2008
at 3 p.m. the Guest Concert Series welcomes the Alexander String Quartet,
Zakarias Grafilo, violin; Frederick Lifsitz, violin; Paul Yarbrough, viola; and Sandy Wilson, cello. The quartet will joined by pianist
June Choi Oh for this performance. The Alexander String Quartet has performed in the major music
capitals of four continents, securing its standing among the world's premier
ensembles, widely admired for its interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart and
Shostakovich. The performance will
feature the works of Haydn, Lou Harrison, and Schumann.
On Sunday, March 2 at
3 p.m. the San Francisco Symphony members Mariko Smiley, violin, Nanci
Severance, viola, and Ann Pinsker, cello will perform works by J.S. Bach, Jean Françaix,

frequently in chamber music festivals and series. They will be joined by pianist
Evelyne Luest.
Opera will be featured in the final concert of the Guest
Concert Series on Sunday, April 13 at 3

Meyerbeer, and Massenet. A recipient of the Adler Fellowship at San Francisco

world premiere of John Adams’ Doctor
Atomic at San Francisco Opera.
Pianist Amy Glenn, who is a staff coach at the San Francisco Conservatory
of Music, will accompany him in the afternoon concert.
