Dominican University of California Junior Named Hollings Scholar

Desaree Williams, a junior biology major in Dominican University of California’s Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, has been offered an appointment to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program.

Williams, who is a member of Dominican’s Honors Program, is one of 100 nationwide candidates selected as Hollings Scholars this year.

“Desaree is always eager to learn and is a great role model for the other students in our department,” says Sibdas Ghosh, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Williams, from Spring Valley, Calif., will receive an $8,000 scholarship per year for two years. In addition, she will receive a paid summer internship as a Hollings Scholar, which will give her the opportunity to apply her coursework to real-world activities in oceanic and atmospheric science and research, policy development, management, and education.

Her appointment to this program is in recognition of her previous accomplishments and in expectation of future achievements in undergraduate study related to a scientific or technical area pertinent to the mission of the NOAA.
