Dominican Hosts Marin Education Fund's Summer Application Institute

Fifty-three high school students will spend the week living and learning at Dominican University of California during the Marin Education Fund’s Summer Application Institute. Now in its ninth year, the institute has a 100 percent success rate at sending low-income students from underrepresented groups to college.

During the five-day program, which runs from August 5-9, the students will learn how to obtain financial assistance, complete the college application process, take part in test preparation activities, and participate in intensive writing clinics geared toward college and scholarship application essays. After attending the Summer Application Institute, students are matched with mentors with whom they meet throughout the year. Adult mentors provide the encouragement and experience students need to make college a reality.

This year, three program alumni, including Dominican sophomore Gloria Garcia, are returning as student advisors and teaching classes such as College Admissions, Team Building and College Applications as well as assisting with the training of volunteer mentors.
