The Heart of Marin Awards luncheon, which honors nominees for civic involvement and contributions within the community, is sponsored by the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership in partnership with founding sponsor Tamalpais Bank. The Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership hands out awards in seven categories.
The Corporate Community Service award was won by Frank Howard Allen Realtors. Noreen Smith, who earned her Bachelor's of Science degree in Business Administration and MBA in Strategic Leadership from Dominican University, is President and Chief Operations Officer for Frank Howard Allen.
Dominican sponsors the “Excellence in Board Leadership Award” for an exceptional volunteer member of a Marin nonprofit board of directors. Six of this year’s nominees in that category had Dominican connections. North Bay Children’s Center board president Melissa Ahern, a 1984 Dominican graduate, plus Marin Literacy Program board member Christanne Gallagher ’83, Mountain Play Association board member Eileen Grady ’88 and Marin Agricultural Institute board member Doug Stonebreaker ’02 are all alums of Dominican while fellow nominee Etta Allen, board member of the Guide Dogs for the Blind, is former chair of the President’s Council at Dominican and nominee Dennis Gilardi, board member of Hospice by the Bay, is the husband of Susan (Johann) Gilardi, Dominican Class of 1988.
Three Dominican alums were nominated for “Volunteer of the Year” led by Rose Wolf, Class of 2008, of the Institute for Health and Healing. She joins repeat nominee Patricia Anastasi ‘01 of Catholic Charities CYO’s Canal Family Support Program and Michelle Miller ’05 of Suicide Prevention and Community Counseling as “Volunteer of the Year” nominees.
In the “Excellence in Leadership” award category, Laurie Cohen, director of Mill Valley Philharmonic, was nominated again. She is a 1985 graduate of Dominican.
KRON 4 television personality and KCBS Radio film critic Jan Wahl again emceed the event. A record crowd of more than 750 attended this year’s award ceremonies.
