Q: Where are students housed?

Students have the option of living in one of the four residence halls on campus. Pennafort and Fanjeaux Halls are reserved for first-time freshmen students, while sophomores, juniors and seniors are housed in Edgehill Village and Meadowlands Hall. Additionally, Dominican has contracted with the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in San Rafael, only five minutes from campus, to accommodate students in a block of rooms.

Q: How and when do I apply for student housing?

New students will apply for on-campus housing after they have been admitted. Your housing application and deposit must be received by May 1 in order to have priority for on-campus housing. The Office of Admissions will send you the necessary paperwork.

Be sure that on your application for admission, you indicate that you wish to live on campus. Continuing students will participate in the Housing Lottery in the early spring semester for rooms the following fall term.

Q: When will I find out my housing assignment?

New students who are admitted and deposited by May 1 will be assigned to a room during the summer months. Expect to receive your room assignment sometime in mid-July.

Due to limited space on campus, we cannot honor room/roommate requests for new students. Continuing students will choose their room and roommates during the Housing Lottery in the spring.

Q: When can I move in to my dorm?

Move-in for new students happens the week before the start of classes. Detailed information about move-in will be sent to you with your housing assignment.

Q: Can I bring my car to campus? How much does The parking cost?

There is limited parking on-campus. As such, freshmen students are not allowed to have cars on campus. 

Continuing students may bring cars to campus and can purchase a residence hall-parking permit. The price for permits is still to be determined but is estimated to be approximately $250 per year.

Q: May I have overnight guests?

Overnight guests are welcome as long as there are no violations of the student cohabitation policy.

Q: Are there quiet hours in the dorms?

Quiet hours are 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends. Because the schedules of others in the living-learning community can differ, residents are asked to be mindful of noise at night.

Q: Where can I do laundry?

Each residential hall has washers and dryers. Student use their Penguin Pass for laundry by adding value to their cards.

Q: Where can I do laundry if I am living in the hotel?

A laundry room is available for the students. The machines are coin- operated and the hotel determines the price per load is determined by the hotel. 

There is a limited number of machines at the hotel; students are encouraged to do laundry during off-peak hours. and are reminded to be attentive to time so that others can utilize the equipment.

Q: Where can I purchase housewares for the my room?

Many students go to Target in Novato because it is located only 10 minutes north of campus. With more time, some students may venture to IKEA located 30 minutes southeast in Emeryville.

Q: Are there banks nearby?

A variety of major banks and credit unions have offices in Marin County including Wells Fargo, Citi Bank, Bank of America, Circle Bank, First Republic Bank, Bank of Marin, West America Bank, Union Bank, Tamalpais Bank and Redwood Credit Union.

Q: What grocery stores are nearby?

There are two Safeway stores in San Rafael located on B Street and in the Terra Linda area. The closest market to campus is United located at Grand and Third Street. There is a Whole Foods Store located at 340 Third Street, across the street from the Montecito Shopping Center. 

In addition to picking up groceries, students should provide their own toilet paper and cleaning supplies because they are responsible for cleaning their own rooms.

Q: Can I stay in my room during winter and spring break?

The residence halls close during winter break (December–January) and students will need to move home during those few weeks. The residence halls are open during spring break week (typically in March) and although some students are around during this time, the majority are not on campus.

Q: If I live on campus, am I required to have a meal plan?

All students living on-campus are required to have a meal plan. There are no exceptions. Students living at the hotel have the option of purchasing a meal plan.

Q: What are the meal plans and how much does each cost?

There are three meal plan options: 10, 14 or 19 meals per week.  The dining hall serves breakfast, lunch and dinner on Monday through Friday, and brunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday. The costs vary between the three plans and are determined annually.

Q: Who provides the food at the dining hall?

Bon Appétit Management Company operates Caleruega Dining Hall at Dominican.

The company is known for its culinary expertise and commitment to socially responsible practices. The mission of Bon Appétit is to create food that is alive with flavor and nutrition, prepared from scratch using authentic ingredients and done so in a socially responsible manner for the well being of students and the environment.
