Lady Penguins of Softball finish season

The Dominican Women's Softball team lost their final two games of the season on Saturday in a double-header against Notre Dame de Namur University. The Lady Penguins lost a heart-breaker in Game 1, losing 6-5 in extra innings, and losing a close Game 2, 3-1.

Senior First Basemen Shanan Markley, one of four Dominican players playing their final games, was tremendous against the Lady Argonauts pitching, hitting five for seven with a walk and knocking in two RBIs. Senior Starting Pitcher Deena Westrope pitched eight innings giving up only two walks. Catcher Jessica Talman went four for seven with a walk and an RBI. Senior Right-fielder Sunny Castro had a hit and made seven putouts in the field.

This year's team lost a number of close games down the stretch. Of their final seven losses, five were by one run. The team finished with a record of 12-27. Despite the losses, the team did show significant improvement, blowing out Cal State East Bay three times and holding their own against programs they have traditionally struggled against, such as NDNU.

Congratulations to the whole team on the completion of their season.

Dominican Softball goes 0-4

The Dominican Women's Softball team lost their four games this past weekend, losing both double-headers to Bethany University and Holy Names University.

In Game 1 against the Lady Bruins of Bethany, the Lady Penguins got on the board in the first inning off an RBI by Shortstop Kait Manning that sent Outfielder Ashley Mills home. Bethany would come back, however, defeating Dominican 4-1. In a wild Game 2, Dominican gave up nine runs in the first inning, but staged an incredible comeback with eight runs in the fifth, coming to within one run. Dominican couldn't pull it out, however, losing 12-11. Brittany Hale led the team with four hits and three RBI.

In Game 1 against the Lady Hawks of Holy Names, the Lady Penguins again took a 1-0 lead off an RBI single by Ashley Mills that drove in Kristin Kennedy in the bottom of the third inning. Then with Dominican trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, an RBI single by Shanan Markley scored a run by Amber Lara to tie the game. Dominican couldn't capitalize, however, and lost 3-2 in extra innings. In Game 2, starting Pitcher Lesley Fay had one of her best games of the season, allowing only five hits and one unearned run in seven innings. Unfortunately, the bats of the Lady Penguins were all but silent as the team took a 1-0 loss. Fay pitched a marathon-like 243 pitches over the course of the weekend.

The team's record now stands at 12-25. They will finish their season this Saturday as they host Notre Dame de Namur University in a double-header. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.

Women's Softball finishes second at Patten Invitational

The Lady Penguins Softball team had an excellent weekend, going 3-2 at the Patten University Invitational, losing a heart-breaker to Bethany University, 2-1 in the Championship game.

Dominican won against Holy Names, 3-2. Brittany Hale had three hits, two stolen bases and an RBI while hitting lead-off. Laura DeMartini pitched well, holding the Hawks of Holy Names scoreless until the fifth inning.

The team played a nail-biter against Corban in Game 2. Up 4-3 headed into the seventh inning, the Lady Penguins allowed Corban to load the bases with no outs. Two force outs at home plate set up what may have been the highlight of the season as Ashley Mills made a diving catch in the outfield to preserve the win.

They went on to lose to Albertson, 6-0, but bounced back against host Patten, routing the Lady Lions 9-0. Kristin Kennedy and Kait Manning each had two RBIs in the win, and Deena Westrope pitched a gem.

That set up the tournament championship game against the Lady Bruins of Bethany. Down 2-0 in the seventh, a scored run by DeMaritini off an Ashley Mills RBI gave the Lady Penguins a chance that fell just short as a flyout by Kait Manning ended the game.
