Dominican Women's Soccer brings in Houston
Taylor Houston of Petaluma becomes the latest talented recruit to commit to joining Head Coach Jon Delano and the Dominican Women's Soccer program.
Coach Delano discussed the newest addition to his team : "Taylor brings some great athleticism to the program. She is very strong in the air and tackles extremely well. She also reads the game very well which is very important for a center back."
While with the Trojans of Petaluma, she helped lead the program to a share of the Sonoma County League title. Taylor also plays for Santa Rosa United along with fellow signee, Julianna Bratsberg. Coach Delano and Houston also met in 2005 when he coached her in the ODP.

Rizo, Elkins sign with Dominican Women's Soccer
Coach Jon Delano's Women's Soccer team continues to draw top recruits to Dominican.
Jill Rizo comes to Dominican from nearby Windsor High School. A four-year starter with 23 career shutouts and two conference championships, Rizo was named Windor's Female Athlete of the Year for 2007.
Coach Delano commented on his new goalkeeper: "Jill is a great GK and tremendous athlete. I watched her play for Windsor High a few times this past year and I was very impressed with her athleticism and leadership. She is a 4.0 student who shows enormous dedication to the classroom as well as the soccer field. We are thrilled to bring Jill to DU."
Shayna Elkins (bottom) comes to Dominican from the highly rated Santa Rosa United Soccer Club. A true holding midfielder, Shayna's club team won State Cup last year. She has also been on championship teams in the Rage Showcase, President's Day in Phoenix, Cal Cup, and Super Y Champions.
Coach Delano's comments : "I know we are getting a proven winner in Shayna. I have watched her play quite a bit over the past year. I love the fact that she is very technical and has great vision on the field. She has the ability to stretch out the defence with her passing."
Shayna also played for Montgomery High School which has been ranked nationally. This past season they lost in the NCS Championship game. She was voted as her team MVP.
"Shayna excels in the classroom and on the field. She has great character which is something we pride our program on."
2008 is looking like another great season for Dominican Women's Soccer.

Women's Soccer : Lady Penguins land another one
Dominican's Women's Soccer program continues to improve with the recent commitment of Katie Brown of San Diego, California.
Katie Brown is a left full back from San Diego, California. She currently plays her club soccer with FC Bratz which is based out of San Diego. "Katie is left footed and is comfortable attacking out of the back. We are extremely pleased that Katie picked Dominican University." Katie currently attends Our Lady of Peace of High School where she is an academic standout. "Katie is focused on academics and has a strong passion for soccer, which are two of the qualities we look for in our recruits."

Women's Soccer signs top recruit
The Lady Penguins of the Dominican Women's Soccer team looked to improve an already impressive roster this week as a top area recruit has signed a letter of intent to attend Dominican University of California.
Julianna Bratsberg comes to DU from Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa, where Coach Delano graduated in 1999. She plays her club ball for Santa Rosa United, where she has attended major tournaments like Surf Cup, Nomads, as well as Super Y National Camp. She helped lead MCHS to the NCS semi-finals all four years on varsity. "We are very excited to have Julianna here at DU. She is everything that we are trying to build this program around. A great student, a great leader, and most importantly, an extremely level-headed person." Delano and Julianna first met in 2005 when Delano coached her ODP team.
With six months to go before the start of the season, 2008 is already looking good for Dominican Women's Soccer.

Mendez, Delano Earn Individual Cal Pac Honors as Ten Earn Honors
San Rafael, Calif. — The 2007 women's soccer All-Cal Pac team was released by Cal Pac Commissioner Don Ott today.
California Pacific Conference women’s soccer co-champions Dominican University of California and Menlo College dominated the individual honors by placing 13 players on the first and second All-Conference teams. Sophomore Eleanna Mendez earned the Player of the Year award in hotly contested balloting. The league’s leading vote-getter tallied eight goals and six assists to help lead the Penguins to the league co-championship.
Head coach Jonathan Delano, in his second season, won the Coach of the Year honor by a vote of his peers. In addition to Mendez, senior captain Blaire Fleming and freshman Bridget Folan were named to the California Pacific Conference First Team. Named to the Second Team are senior captain Stacy Krikorian and freshmen Kelly Miura and goalie Alicia Paulsen.
Players garnering an Honorable Mention for Dominican are freshmen Christine Coleman and Michelle Mason and senior Nicole Jackson.
The Lady Penguins finished with a 9-4-2 overall mark and finished as Cal Pac Conference Co-Champions with Menlo College with a 5-0-1 conference mark.

Tie makes Dominican California Pacific Conference Co-Champions
Atherton, Calif. — The Lady Penguins battled the Menlo College Oaks to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon, ending in a California Pacific Conference Co-Championship between the two teams. For Dominican, it is the program's first championship since earning the University's only two, back-to-back championships in 1999 and 2000.
Freshman Bridget Folan scored her team-high eleventh goal of the season in the first half before a costly penalty kick in the second half led to Menlo's goal. The two teams remained scoreless throughout both overtime periods, resulting in the 1-1 tie. With the tie, the 2007 Lady Penguins season comes to an end. Despite tying with Menlo and finishing with the same conference record, the complicated Longo points system gives Menlo the edge over Dominican. Thus, Menlo earns the automatic berth to the NAIA Region II Postseason Tournament.
Folan led the Lady Penguins with 11 goals and 26 points; sophomore co-captain Eleanna Mendez finished second on the team with 8 goals and 22 points. Senior co-captains Blaire Fleming and Stacy Krikorianand junior Christina Freitas each finished the season with four goals apiece.

Folan earns Cal Pac, Region II Offensive Player of the Week honors
San Rafael, Calif. — Folan tallied two goals in an 8-1 win over Bethany and recorded her first career hat trick against William Jessup in a 9-0 victory. The freshman's five goals put her in the team lead with 10, averaging .83 per game.

Dominican women shut out Simpson 1-0

Redding, Calif. — The Dominican women inched closer to their first California Pacific Conference since 2000 with a 1-0 shutout over Simpson University on Tuesday. The picture-perfect goal came when freshman Bridget Folan's pass from the left side of the box found a streaking sophomore co-captain Eleanna Mendez headed towards goal. Mendez's eighth goal of the season was all the Lady Penguins needed as the Dominican defense did its part, limiting the Red Hawks to six shots.
Dominican will travel to Menlo College in Atherton on Saturday, October 27 for the deciding game of the 2007 season, as the two teams face off to decide who is the California Pacific Conference Champion. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.

Dominican women trample Warriors

San Rafael, Calif. — The Lady Penguins racked up nine goals in a shutout over William Jessup University on Saturday afternoon at Forest Meadows. The Dominican women took an astounding 25 shots, 17 of which were on frame, to Jessup's four shots and four on goal. The result was nine goals and two assists, and a combined shutout by Dominican. Freshman Bridget Folan recorded her first collegiate hat trick, giving her a team-high ten goals on the season. Senior co-captain Stacy Krikorian added two goals to the effort. Seniors Annalisa Hopper, co-captain Jennifer Jackson, and Nicole Jackson, and junior Kelli Corlett rounded out the scoring onslaught for Dominican. Goalies Alicia Paulsen, Tosca Bonardi, and Leighia Flemingcombined for the shutout, with Paulsen and Fleming making two saves apiece. With the win, the Lady Penguins earn their eighth of the season, surpassing the seven they had in 2006.
Dominican will now travel to Redding to face the Simpson University Red Hawks. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. on October 23.

Dominican women roar past Bruins

San Rafael, Calif. — The Dominican women recorded their third win in Cal Pac play with an 8-1 victory over visiting Bethany University on Tuesday afternoon. In pouring rain, five Dominican players found the back of the net. Freshmen did much of the heavy lifting, as Kelly Miura recorded her first career hat trick and Bridget Folan scored twice. Sophomore captain Eleanna Mendezrecorded a goal and an assist, pushing her season totals to a team-leading seven goals and five assists.
Freshman goalie Alicia Paulsen played 61:02 in the net for Dominican and allowed Bethany's lone goal. Sophomore Tosca Bonardifinished out the match in goal.
Dominican will host William Jessup University on Saturday with kickoff set for 11:00 a.m. Saturday will also be Senior Day, with a pregame event honoring this year's seniors: captains Blaire Fleming, Jennifer Jackson, and Stacy Krikorian, Annalisa Hopper and Nicole Jackson.

Penguins slip as Banana Slugs win in non-conference match

San Rafael, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team snapped a two game win streak on Sunday, falling 6-0 to host UC Santa Cruz. Dominican was limited to only three shots, all on goal, compared to the Banana Slugs' 25 shots, 10 of which were on goal. With the loss, the Lady Penguins fell to 6-4-1 while UCSC improved to an impressive 8-2-2.

Mendez, Fleming earn Weekly Cal Pac Conference honors
San Rafael, Calif. — Dominican University of California women's soccer captains Blaire Fleming and Eleanna Mendez
were named Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week, respectively, by the Cal Pac for the week of October 1 to 7.
Fleming helped the Dominican University of California women hold Holy Names University scoreless in the first
half of a 2-1 victory and win their first Cal Pac Conference match of 2007. Fleming has been consistent all season and has been a large part of why the Lady Penguins are holding opponents to less than two goals per game.
Mendez earns her second honor of the season for her goal that put the Lady Penguins on the scoreboard in the 2-1 win on Saturday. Mendez currently leads the Cal Pac in assists (.5/game) and points (14).
The Lady Penguins face Mills College this afternoon at home at 2:30 p.m.

Lady Penguins dominate Lady Hawks in conference opener

Oakland, Calif. — The 2007 Cal Pac season got off to a great start for the Dominican Lady Penguins, as they rolled to a 2-1 victory over host Holy Names on Saturday afternoon. The Dominican women bested their 0-0 tie against the Lady Hawks from last year to improve to 5-3-1 on this season. Sophomore Eleanna Mendez's goal from senior Jennifer Jackson got things going for Dominican in the ninth minute of the game, finding the back of the net to put the Lady Penguins up 1-0. A goal before the half would add a goal to go up 2-0 by halftime. Holy Names cut the lead in half in the second half on a corner kick but Dominican held strong, with senior captain Blaire Fleminganchoring the defense.
On Tuesday, the Lady Penguins take on Mills College in a Cal Pac Conference match. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.

Dominican comes up short in double overtime thriller

Hayward, Calif. — The Dominican University of California Lady Penguins fell to host CSU East Bay 2-1 on Saturday. In a thrilling double overtime match, the Lady Penguins found themselves down 1-0 going into halftime but a Bridget Folan goal at 74:14 from a Michelle Mason assist locked things at 1-1 and sent the game into overtime. Neither team scored in the first overtime period but CSU East Bay converted a free kick at 116:08 to give the Pioneers the 2-1 victory. Freshman Alicia Paulsenhad nine saves in the loss.
With the loss, Dominican drops to 4-3-1. They face the Alumni on Saturday before entering Cal Pac play the following Saturday, October 6 against rival Holy Names. Faceoff is set for 2:00 p.m.

Bonardi's goalkeeping recognized by Cal Pac Conference
San Rafael, Calif. — Sophomore goalie Tosca Bonardi is splitting time in the net this year with freshman Alicia Paulsen, who was named the Cal Pac Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of August 27 to September 2. While Bonardi may have a hard time sharing playing time, she certainly hasn't been overlooked. It was announced Tuesday that the sophomore has earned Cal Pac Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week of September 10 to 16. In parts of three games she allowed only one goal to San Diego Christian College. Against The Master's College, Bonardi played the second half and both overtimes, not allowing a goal, and shut out Fresno Pacific University in that game's second half.
The Dominican women have this week off before tuning up for Cal Pac Conference play with two non-conference games on September 24 and 29. On the 24, the women travel to Bethany for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff and then travel to Hayward to face CSU East Bay on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Dominican shut out for first time against Fresno Pacific

Fresno, Calif. — The Lady Penguins were shut out for the first time all season in a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds on Saturday night. A goal off a corner kick put FPU up 1-0 in the game's sixth minute and a goal at 23:40 pushed the Sunbird lead to 2-0. Freshman Alicia Paulsen started the game in goal for the Lady Penguins and gave up both goals. Sophomore keeper Tosca Bonardiplayed the second half and made one save. Dominican was outshot on goal, 7-2 and had 2-9 corner kick disadvantage.
The Dominican women have a week off before traveling to Bethany University on September 24 for a 1:00 p.m. match.

Lady Penguins lose, tie in trip to Southern California

Santa Clarita, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team saw their perfect 3-0 start snapped on Monday with a 5-2 loss to San Diego Christian College.
The Lady Penguins got off to a good start on Tuesday, jumping out to a 2-0 lead on goals by last week's Cal Pac Player of the Week Eleanna Mendez and a goal by Southern California native Jennifer Jackson. With a 2-1 lead at halftime, the Penguins looked desined for victory until The Master's came roaring back with three straight goals scattered over the first 27 minutes of the second half. A Christina Freitas assist to a streaking Bridget Folan down the right side led to Dominican's third goal in the 80th minute and cut TMC's lead to one. A Kelli Corlett assist to Freitas on the left side of the box led to Dominican's fourth goal, knotting things in the 87th minute. That's how things would stay, as neither team would score in the two ten-minute overtimes. Sophomore keeper Tosca Bonardirelieved freshman Alicia Paulsen and did not allow a goal in 33 minutes of work, including both extra periods.
With the loss and the tie, the Lady Penguins record stands at 3-1-1. The Lady Penguins travel to Fresno Pacific University on Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. game.

Game versus Bethany added to schedule
San Rafael, Calif. — Head Dominican coach Jon Delano announced Monday that he has added a game to the Lady Penguins' 2007 schedule. In further preparation for conference play, Dominican will play a non-conference match at Bethany University in Scotts Valley on September 24. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Mendez, Paulsen earn Cal Pac's first Player of the Week honors
San Rafael, Calif. — Sophomore Eleanna Mendez and freshman goalkeeper Alicia Paulsen
were named the California Pacific Conference Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for the week of August 27 to September 2.
Mendez helped the Lady Penguins to a 3-0 mark with assists in close wins against Vanguard and Warner Pacific.
The 2006 Cal Pac All-Conference member also recorded her first two goals of the season in 100-plus degree weather against William Jessup University. Mendez earned the award last season for her game winning goal against Simpson University on October 21, 2006.
Paulsen allowed two goals in three matches, recording her first collegiate shutout against Warner Pacific on Friday. The freshman keeper has made 8 saves on 10 shots on goal (80 percent).

San Rafael, Calif. — The Lady Penguins didn't have their sharpest stuff on Friday afternoon against Warner Pacific College but freshman Rita Caskey's first collegiate goal at 40:45 was all Dominican needed to improve to 3-0 on the young season. The Lady Penguins had 10 shots on goal and only allowed one shot on goal. "With this win we proved to ourselves that we can still grind it out and get it done when we're having a bad day," said Dominican head coach Jon Delano.The Dominican women next play when they travel to San Diego for three games. Dominican improves to 2-0 with win over William Jessup

Rocklin, Calif. — The Dominican women got a taste of what the Cal Pac conference will be like when they met the William Jessup Warriors in Rocklin for a non-conference match. Enduring 100-plus degree weather, the Lady Penguins recorded a 5-1 victory over the host Warriors. Dominican was the benefactor of an own goal by Jessup to even the game at 1-1 going into halftime. The Lady Penguins came out firing in the second half, scoring four goals. Freshman Bridget Folan scored her second goal of the season at the 54:00 minute mark from a Blaire Fleming assist. Senior Jennifer Jackson got into the action when she found the back of the net on a Kelli Corlett cross from the left side. Sophomore captain Eleanna Mendezcapped the scoring with two goals at the 86:00 and 88:00 minute marks.
The Lady Penguins are next in action when they face Warner Pacific University at home on August 31 at 4:00 p.m.

Dominican comes-from-behind for victory in season opener

San Rafael, Calif. — The Lady Penguins came roaring back from a 1-0 halftime deficit on Monday with a two-goal second half to defeat Vanguard University 2-1. Danielle Dantino put Vanguard ahead at the 25:00 mark. The Lady Penguins came out firing with nine second half shots. Freshman Bridget Folan's goal off an Eleanna Mendez assist in the 74:00 minute tied things up and gave Dominican the momentum. Seven minutes later, Blaire Fleming headed Annalisa Hopper's pass from the left side and found the back of the net. Of his team's performance, head Dominican coach Jon Delanosaid, "I think is just a sign of where the program's moving, our girls showed a lot of heart today." With the win, the Lady Penguins improve to 1-0-0 while Vanguard falls to 0-1-0.
Dominican will travel to William Jessup University on Wednesday for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match.

Dominican releases 2007 preseason soccer rosters
San Rafael, Calif. — Dominican soccer head coaches John Brooks and Jon Delano released their preseason rosters for the 2007 season today. Delano has since joined Dominican as a full time coach and his women look to be strong in 2007. The Lady Penguins feature four seniors, including captain Stacy Krikorian and the return of defender Annalisa Hopper. New to the mix are numerous freshmen, including 5-foot-9 goalkeeper Alicia Paulsen (Ursuline HS), and Marin native Marli Sangervasi (Sir Francis Drake HS), who Delano expects to make an immediate impact. "We have the strongest group of players and pure athletes that we've had in nearly a decade," said Delano. Dominican Soccer releases 2007 soccer schedule
San Rafael, Calif. — Head coach John Delano announced the release of the 2007 women's soccer schedule today. The schedule features a number of non-conference matches against GSAC programs, including San Diego Christian and Fresno Pacific. The whole month of October will be crucial for the Lady Penguins, as they will play all six of their California Pacific Conference matches in October. Ghirarduzzi, Kitt earn top honors at end-of-year banquet
San Rafael, Calif. — The Dominican University of California held their annual Athletics banquet Monday night. More than 170 of Dominican's student-athletes, coaches, and administrators gathered at the Conlan Recreation Center to celebrate Dominican's athletic achievements for 2006-2007.
The Penguins had plenty to be proud of during the 2006-2007 season, garnerning numerous honors, including 21 Cal Pac Player of the Week Selections, 18 Cal Pac All-Conference Selections, 1 Cal Pac Newcomer of the Year, 1 Cal Pac Freshman of the Year, 1 NAIA Region II Player of the Week, 1 NAIA National Player of the Week, and 14 NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
Senior Tina Ghirarduzzi
(pictured at right) was named the 2006-2007 Dominican Co-Women's Athlete of the Year after setting the women's scoring title with 46 goals scored. Ghirarduzzi played in 64 games as a Lady Penguin and scored 100 career points while being named to the Cal Pac All-Conference team three times.
Senior Beverly Kitt
was named the 2006-2007 Dominican Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for her dedication not only in the field but also in the classroom. Kitt played in 55 games as a Lady Penguin. She is a two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete and is a member of the Gamma Sigma Society, an academic honor society at Dominican.
Men's soccer players Todd Seech and Eric Hughes were named Men's Athlete of the Year and Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, respectively. Volleyball player Jenna Fussell
was named the other 2007 Dominican Co-Women's Athlete of the Year.
Last season, men's basketball player David Moore and men's soccer player JP McCarvel
were named Co-Athlete of the Year for setting scoring titles in their respective sports.

Three Lady Penguins named NAIA Scholar-Athletes
Olathe, Kan. — The 2006 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes have been named for women's soccer. Dominican University of California seniors Bev Kitt and Sara Trudeau and junior Jennifer Jackson have been recognized with the honor for their excellence on and off of the field. Other 2006 Dominican Scholar-Athletes include men's soccer players Eric Hughes and Patrick Jackson, as well as volleyball players Amanda Deely, Jenna Fussell, Bridget Gengler, and Ashley Wells.

Four Dominican players named to All-Conference team
San Rafael, Calif. — Dominican seniors Tina Ghirarduzzi and Bev Kitt were named to the 2006 California Pacific Conference All-Conference First Team. Junior Jennifer Jackson and freshman Eleanna Mendez
were both named to the Cal Pac Second Team.
Ghirarduzzi finishes her career as the Dominican women's all-time leading goal scorer with 46 goals and 100 career points. She was named to the Cal Pac All-Conference team three times.
Kitt anchored the Dominican defense and started in all 16 of the Lady Penguins' games.
Mendez finished the season second in scoring for the Lady Penguins with six goals and 14 points while Jackson was third on the team with five goals.

San Rafael, Calif. — Senior Tina Ghirarduzzi had eight shots on goal in her final game as a Lady Penguin but neiher Dominican or Holy Names could score in 110 minutes of play. With the tie, Dominican ended in third place in the Cal Pac behind Holy Names and Menlo. Ghirarduzzi finishes her career as the Dominican women's all-time leading goal scorer with 46 goals and 100 career points. Freshman Eleanna Mendez (pictured above), last week's Cal Pac Player of the Week, finished the season second in scoring for the Lady Penguins with six goals and 14 points. Goalie Tosca Bonardi finished the season strong with eight saves, including a diving save to break up an HNU fast break late in the game. Bonardi finished the season with 1362 minutes logged in the goal and a 1.45 GAA. Aside from Ghirarduzzi, the tie marked the final game for seniors Lori Davis, Ariel Esqueda, Jenny Jackson, Bev Kitt, Christina Puentes, and Sara Trudeau

Head coach Jon Delano led the Lady Penguins to their best finish since 1999 (7-7-2/4-1-1), including a win against ranked Concordia of Irvine and an exhibition against the Ghana Women's National Team.
