Women's Golf finishes season at NAIA Regionals

The Dominican Women's golf team finished in 5th place this week at the NAIA Western Regionals in San Luis Obispo. Senior Team Captain Michelle Mitra let the team with rounds of 88,81, good enough to capture sole possession of 6th place and a spot on the All Region II Women’s Team.

Congratulations to the whole team on a successful completion of their season.

Women's Golf places 10th at Bayonet

The Lady Penguins of the Dominican Women's Golf team had a very strong outing at the Bayonet Invitational hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay this past week. The team finished in tenth place, finishing ahead of regional rivals Cal State East Bay and Sonoma State.

Taylor Welty was the best individual performer for Dominican, coming in 17th finishing +21 with a 167 over two rounds. Michelle Mitra (pictured) had Dominican's second-best performance for the invitational, finishing +34 with a 178.

Also this past week, the Men's Golf team secured its position in the upcoming Cal Pac Championship Tournament as they came in third place at the Menlo College Invitational at Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course. Tyler Evans led Dominican with a 76 for sixth place overall. The team's total was 326. Daley Cort was second for the Penguins with a 77, good for 11th place.

The Women's team will play next at the Butte Creek Country Club Invitational hosted by CSU Chico on April 7th to the 8th. The Men's team will complete their conference schedule at the Cal Pac Championship Tournament hosted by Holy Names University in Alameda on April 10th.

Women's Golf kicks off Spring with third place finish at East Bay

The Lady Penguins of Women's Golf came in third place this past week at the Cal State East Bay Invitational at the Monarch Bay Golf Club in San Leandro. In a field that included many NAIA and NCAA Division II programs, the Dominican Women's Golf team was impressive, narrowly missing out on second place by the host Lady Pioneers of East Bay.

Dominican finished with a two day team total of 719, just six strokes behind East Bay's 713. Taylor Welty (pictured) had Dominican's best two day individual low score of 173. Michelle Mitra and Bianca Gabriel were both one stroke off with 174's. Also placing for Dominican were Lauren Wagner with 194, Ashley Rubin with 199 and Kelli Corlett with a 207. Notre Dame de Namur University of the NCAA Division II would win the event with a team score of 676.

It was the first event of the Spring semester for Dominican Women's Golf.

The Lady Penguins hit the links next March 16th to the 18th at the CSU Monterey Bay tournament to be held at Bay Bayonet Golf Course.

Mitra named to 2007 NAIA Region II Women's Golf Team

San Rafael, Calif. — Junior Michelle Mitra has been named to the 2007 Region II women's golf team.  Mitra knocked down two birdie putts in the NAIA Region II Tournament in Palm Desert in April, where she finished with a score of 155 (+13) over two rounds. The score placed her third in the tournament and just one stroke short of sending her to the NAIA National Tournament.  Earlier in the season, the Hercules native earned medalist honors when she shot an 80 in the CSU East Bay Ladies Invitational.  Mitra has been a member of the women's golf team at Dominican for all three seasons of the program's existence.

Dominican women finish fourth in NAIA Region II Tournament

Palm Desert, Calif. — Junior Michelle Mitra knocked down two birdie putts in the NAIA Region II Tournament in Palm Desert on Monday and Tuesday, however her score of 155 (+13) over two rounds was one stroke short of sending her to the NAIA National Tournament.  Mitra finished in third, behind CSU San Marcos' Jennell French and Ellyse Siu, who both shot 154 for the tournament.  Junior Taylor Welty finished in fourteenth place with 171.  Junior Lauren Wagner, sophomore Kelli Corlett, and freshman Maggie DePond

finished with scores of 186, 190, and 192, respectively.  As a team, the Lady Penguins finished in fourth place in their first ever NAIA Region II Tournament appearance.

Lady Penguins fight through rain at Otter Invitational

Monterey, Calif. — The Dominican women finished with a team score of 383 in the Lady Otter Invitational.  Taylor Welty

finished tied for 18 with rounds of 89 and 83.

Lady Penguins finish third after rain delay

San Rafael, Calif. — The Dominican women had play suspended at the CSU East Bay Ladies Invitational at Monarch Bay due to rain on Tuesday afternoon. Play resumed on Wednesday and the Dominican women finished in third place, with Notre Dame de Namur University winning the tournament. Junior Michelle Mitra

won medalist honors with a score of 80 under extremely tough conditions that included high winds and rain. The Lady Penguins finished with a team total of 374.

Dominican Golf Program announces rosters, schedules

San Rafael, Calif. — Dominican University of California head golf coach Jon Delano announced the rosters and schedules for the upcoming 2007 season today.  Delano, in his first year as golf coach, has 11 players on this season's men's golf squad and has more than doubled the women's squad, who now has seven.  Returners for the men include juniors Jeremy Boucher, Daley Cort, and Greg Lynch, who have all been on the squad since the golf program's inception in 2005.  On the women's side, Bianca Gabriel, Michelle Mitra, and Taylor Welty are all veterans who have been with the program for all three years.  New faces for Dominican golf include freshman Cory Simon and Charles John Vuytowecz on the men's side and sophomore Kelli Corlett, who also plays soccer for Delano, on the women's side.  The men first tee off on February 12 while the women begin on February 25.  To download the men's schedule and roster, click here.  Click here

Dominican announces hiring of new Golf Head Coach

San Rafael, Calif. — Jon Delano, who was recently hired as the Men's and Women's Soccer Assistant Coach, has also been hired as the Head Coach of the Men's and Women's Golf teams.  Delano attended Dominican and has coached numerous soccer clubs as well as worked at McInnis Park in San Rafael.  Delano replaces Cheryl Lala, who departed this year after starting the Dominican Golf program in 2005. Assistant Athletic Dirctor and Head Soccer Coach John Brooks, who works alongside Delano on the soccer field said, "We're really excited to have Jon on board, he has the opportunity to raise the Golf program to new heights."

Dominican Golf's Sophomore Season

San Rafael, Calif. — Dominican’s women's golf is in its second season this year. The Lady Penguins make their home at Peacock Gap Country Club in San Rafael, Indian Valley Golf Course in Novato, San Geronimo Golf Course in San Geronimo, and McInnis Golf Course in San Rafael.

 

For the 2005-2006 school year, the women’s golf team has/will compete(d) in the following tournaments:

October 17-18   Dominican Triangular hosted by Dominican University of California

 

March 6-7          Feel Golf/ Lady Otter Invitational hosted by CSU Monterey Bay
