Dominican Lacrosse announces Team Captains, Assistant Coaches
The 2008 Men’s Lacrosse Season promises to be a strong one for the Penguins of Dominican University. Head Coach Ned Webster has assembled an exciting group of returning players and incoming recruits as the team looks forward to joining the NCAA Division II within two years. As one of only three varsity men’s lacrosse programs in California, the opportunities for the program will only continue to grow.
“As each year passes and we get closer toward our plan of becoming an NCAA Division II program by 2010, we will add more and more NCAA teams just as we have this season with Whittier and Grand Canyon. We’ve also developed some fun rivalries with Cal and Stanford, and we will culminate our season with a trip to Salt Lake City for round-robin play against Westminster College and Grand Canyon for the newly established ‘Baggataway Cup.’”
Coach Webster also announced his team captains in Jesse Copeland, Justin Jarvis and Lawrence Nardi.
Copeland, a fifth year MBA student and three-year starter at the defenseman position, was fourth on the team this past season in ground balls with 43, and brings tremendous veteran leadership and commitment to the team.
Jarvis, a Senior Midfielder from Riverbank, California, is a versatile presence at both ends of the playing field.
Nardi, a Sophomore Midfielder from Berkeley, California, was third on the team last season win goals, assists and points, and was second on the team in groundballs with 71. He also won an impressive 57% of his faceoffs.
Coach Webster commented at length regarding his team captains.
“Jesse and Justin are founders of this program, having been on the team since our inaugural year, and are not only solid leaders and smart players but outstanding human beings.”
“Obviously it's uncommon for a sophomore to be named captain, but Lawrence’s election speaks volumes about our team’s admiration of his effort and tenacity at both ends of the field and should help mature him and our team for the future.”
The program also names its assistants for the coming season, with Tim Booth, Mike Hennessey and Mike Golden.
Tim Booth comes to the program from the professional San Francisco Dragons of the MLL as well as the San Jose Stealth of the NLL. A four year professional lacrosse player, Booth excelled in both football and lacrosse at Hobart College, earning All American honors as a linebacker in football in 2002 and was named Defensive Player of the Year in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association. He helped Hobart win two UCAA Championships and NCAA appearances in 2000 and 2002.
“Tim is one of those throwback two-way midfielders. He not only has extensive knowledge of both the offensive and defensive ends of the field, but he can teach faceoffs, shooting, and he’s a certified trainer. We’re lucky and excited to have such a dynamic coach joining the program.” Coach Webster commented.
Mike Hennessy comes to the program from Quinnipiac University, where he was a four year starter, excelling at defense, long stick midfield and facing off. Hennessy made the All-New England and All-Great Western Lacrosse League, leading his team in ground balls.
Coach Webster adds. “Mike Hennessey has a diverse knowledge of the defensive positions and is an excellent teacher of the game.”
Mike Golden is an alumnus of Dominican University where he was a two-time team captain. He was named Team MVP in 2005 and was named Most Unselfish Player in 2006, leading the team in assists both seasons.
“Mike Golden brings loads of energy and enthusiasm to the table. It’s great to have an alumnus on board, someone who cares intensely about our program’s success.”
With strong leadership in place and increased depth, 2008 has the makings of a solid season for the Penguins of Dominican University.

All-American to assist Dominican Lacrosse Program
San Rafael, Calif. — Steve Holmes, a former All-American at the University of Virginia and a professional player with the San Francisco Dragons (MLL) and San Jose Stealth (NLL), will serve as an assistant coach for the men’s lacrosse program at Dominican University of California, head coach Ned Webster announced today. Holmes will join the Penguins for 2007 and help work with the defense.
Holmes was one of nine ACC defensemen and seven ACC rookies to start every game his freshman year (2002). He was third among ACC freshmen in ground balls with 41. A captain his junior year, Holmes was named an Honorable Mention STX/USILA All-American player in 2005. Holmes picked up 43 ground balls in 2005 and finished second among ACC close defensemen, averaging 2.87/g.
“Welcoming Steve aboard has been yet another significant step towards the development of Penguin Lacrosse, and he will be huge help at the defensive end of the field,” said head coach Ned Webster
. “He possesses an excellent pedigree, and has played the game with great success on the biggest stages the sport has to offer. Steve is extremely detailed and passionate about his coaching, and is a solid representative of our program, the University and Northern California lacrosse.”
Holmes will be assisting at Dominican while he plays for the San Jose Stealth of the National Lacrosse League. “I’m really excited to be a part of this,” said Holmes. “The program’s really growing under Ned’s direction and Penguin Lacrosse is going places.”
Holmes was drafted in the sixth round (22nd pick overall) of the 2007 NLL Entry Draft by the Stealth. In 2006, he was picked in the third round (22nd
pick overall) in the MLL Collegiate Draft.

Dominican looks to build in 2007
San Rafael, Calif. - Ned Webster received an e-mail from a friend last October alerting him of the need for a head lacrosse coach at Dominican University of California. A week later, Webster was invited to practice to evaluate the team’s talent and take a tour of the campus. No more than five minutes after his arrival, Webster could envision where he’d be working for years to come.
“As I walked around the outdoor pool, across the footbridge, over the stream, and on to Forest Meadows Field to watch practice, I could feel the buzz and see the enormous potential in building a dominant collegiate lacrosse program in Marin.”
Webster is no stranger to the sport of lacrosse. He is the youngest of four children to Mickey Webster, who was a Hall of Fame attackman and national champion at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. “If my father hadn’t played and been so successful at lacrosse, I probably still would have played simply because it’s so popular back home [in Baltimore], but he has always been the best teacher of the game to me. I have photos and home videos of myself with a lacrosse stick in my hands before I turned one [year old].”
When his father wasn’t coaching him, his two older brothers, Jim and John, were showing him how to play. "Once they reached college, we’d load up the car on the weekends and head south to the University of Virginia to watch Jim play or Chapel Hill to watch John play at the University of North Carolina. Those games were my classroom.”
Webster has visited dozens of college campuses with top-notch college lacrosse programs over his thirty-one years, including those as an attackman at the University of Notre Dame (where he suffered a career-ending knee injury), and he believes with the academic advances at Dominican, the way lacrosse is “booming” in Northern California, the optimal climate in Marin, and the new synthetic turf field that will be installed, that it’s only a short matter of time before the program “explodes.” However, he is aware of the opposing forces he’s up against.
"When I was a senior at Boys’ Latin School in Baltimore, I’d walk into the main hall each morning and check my mailbox for recruiting letters from college coaches. A quarter of them I was usually excited about, another quarter I felt OK about, and the other half I had a juvenile response which was, 'These guys are awful, I'm not goin' there.' I imagine the latter reaction will be similar for kids receiving letters from me this Fall. The difference, something they must understand, is that we aren’t established yet to be considered awful. Sure our record this past year was disappointing, but we haven’t had a full recruiting class yet. We haven’t had a Fall season to prepare for a Spring season.”
“These players are in a unique position to be remembered as founders of a top-caliber team, one of three varsity programs in the state at an excellent university. I think that’s a pretty special distinction.”
Webster smiles and nods confidently, “It’s gonna be a fun year for the Penguins.”
