Women's Basketball season looks bright
Head coach Brianna Chambers brings her first class of recruits in and will instantly throw them into the fire, with six freshmen making up the 14-player roster.
The Dominican women finished last season with an 8-8 conference mark and lost a 52-48 nail biter to Menlo College in the Cal Pac Conference Tournament quarter-finals. Despite losing Olivia Wiliams, the program’s number two all-time scorer with 1,480 points, to graduation, Chambers’ team is looking to move atop the Cal Pac once again.
Leading the charge for the women will be junior guard Alisha Flaaten, a Cal Pac All-Conference player the past two seasons; Raquel Gomes, who was the team’s third leading scorer despite playing half the conference season; and sophomore guard Kelsey Janusch who transferred from UC San Diego but took last season off to focus on her studies before returning to the court.
Supporting these three will be returning seniors, guard Vannessa Miller and center Darcel Sanders; and juniors, guard Michaelia Baskerville and forward Shelly Clermenco. In addition to Janusch, seven players are new to the women’s basketball team. Junior point guard Irina Sharf played at Santa Monica Junior College last season. The freshmen rounding out the roster for Coach Chambers’ squad include forward Shawna Bryant from Ripon, Calif.; forward/center Jordan De Silva-Deramo from Fort Bragg, Calif.; six-foot-two center Keisarina Hafoka from San Mateo, Calif.; guard Brittany Roland from Seattle; guard Chrissy Tucker from Oroville, Calif.; and guard Taki Takoi from Rotorua, New Zealand.
With so much talent, the 2008-2009 season looks to be another strong year for Dominican basketball.
