Additional Requirements

In addition to the general requirements for graduate admissions, the Teacher Credentials program has the following requirements:

  1. Scores on an approved basic skills exam.  There are two options when completing the basic skills requirement.  You may take the CBEST exam or the Multiple Subject CSET plus the CSET Writing Skills subtest. You will need to take one of these exams before your application materials     will be submitted to the admission committee for review.(www.cbest.nesinc.com  Practice examinations are available at www.testprepreview.com/cbest_practice.htm
  2. Statement of Intent: Please respond to each of the following in a typed essay:
    1. Why you have chosen teaching as a profession. Include qualities that you believe make you personally suited for teaching.
    2. Recognizing that public school students are culturally diverse, what do you think will be the implications for you as a classroom teacher? 
    3. Describe your specific strengths and areas for growth as a prospective teacher. 
    4. Describe paid or volunteer experiences in working with elementary or secondary school age students. (Formal: tutoring, substitute teaching, etc. Informal: coaching, Big Brothers, etc.) 
    5. Describe your current knowledge and skill with computer-based technology.
  3. Completed Certificate of Clearance, Livescan, and fee or valid credential. 
  4. Tuberculosis (TB) examination: Skin test or Chest X-ray: Results must be current within 2 years of entering student teaching. 
  5. The subject matter competency requirement for admission may be met in the following ways: 
    1. Completion of an approved academic content course of study (secondary only). 
    2. Passing scores on the CSET,  or confirmation of test registration.   ( www.cset.nesinc.com)
  6.  Internship candidates: 
    1. Passing scores on an approved basic skills examination.
    2. Completion of a U.S. Constitution course or examination.  
    3. Issuance of Certificate of Clearance or valid Emergency Permit, Pre-intern Certificate, or Internship Credential.
    4. Completion of an approved academic content course of study (waiver program) or submission of passing scores on the CSET.Concurrent intern placement in a cooperating school district.
