Service Learning Student Leadership Fellows
Stipends of $1,000 will be awarded each semester to three students with service learning experience, a track record with a particular agency and notable leadership ability.
They will function as liaisons between faculty, students and community partners, particularly at the beginning of each semester when service-learning placements and projects are getting underway. Also, they will mentor and train students and work with faculty interested in developing Service Learning non-profit agency partnerships.
Federal work study in the community
The service-learning coordinator is working closely with the Financial Aid Office to place create a stronger service work study program. The coordinator is working with this office to identify appropriate community partners for federal work study placement, as well as students, eligible for federal work study, with a proven track record in these organizations. The Financial Aid Office is able to fulfill its commitment to place a certain number of students, each year, in the community and partnerships are enriched by the opportunity to continue working with students they have already trained and who are familiar with their program. Career and Internships with Non-Profit Agencies
On a similar note, Service-Learning is also collaborating with Dominican’s Career and Internship Services Program. Many students this year have expanded their service-learning projects for coursework into 1-3 unit internships. Collaborating with Career and Internship Services enhances the student experience and the partner benefit. Several job offers have also emerged. Anecdotal evidence also indicates that roughly 50% of students continue to work with their community partners beyond the commitment required by their course or service internship. They realize that this work gives them a sense of connection with the broader community and that the relationships they have developed in these organizations are important to them. Often they realize that they have found a focus for their convictions that is very meaningful and empowering. More Info.
