Canal Alliance offers services to the people of The Canal area in an effort to deal with the poverty and the influx of many new arrivals who need help with basic necessities. The community consists of mainly Latino immigrant families. Canal Alliance provides services such as English classes, computer lessons, legal counseling, and an after-school program.
English classes, computer lessons, legal counseling, and an after-school program.
An after school program provides mentors and tutors for the participants as well as a safe place to have fun. It includes both middle and high school students from San Rafael schools who have been referred to the program for extra help with their school work. These students are in need of role models and tutors in all subjects.
There is also a need for ESL tutors and for administrative support. Service-Learners who can speak a second language are always needed. Service-Learners at Canal Alliance have the opportunity to interact not only with the students but also with adults in the community who are seeking help. This experience allows service-learners to be exposed to the hidden truths about this area in Marin County.
