  • Canal Alliance

Canal Community Alliance and Canal Ministry have merged to create Canal Alliance.  They offer services to the people of The Canal area in an effort to deal with the poverty and the influx of many new arrivals who need help with basic necessities. The after school program provides mentors and tutors for the participants as well as a safe place to have fun.

Role models and tutors are needed for the after school program.There is also a need for ESL tutors and for administrative support. Volunteers who can speak a second language are always needed. Populations Served:     Low-income members of The Canal neighborhood in San Rafael. Services Provided: Assistance with housing, employment, education, legal issues and other necessities.

  • Homeward Bound

Homeward Bound provides necessary and invaluable resources to the homeless of Marin in the effort to help people reestablish their own homes and lives.  It has facilities established for emergency housing and transitional housing for singles and families with children.  There is also an organic garden at its facility in Novato.

Students are needed as companions, mentors, baby-sitters, tutors, event organizers and with administrative and fund raising work. Students have an opportunity to make a positive impact on a population that is often overlooked.

Populations Served:     Families and single adults who are homeless.
Services Provided:       Emergency and transitional housing, meals, job training, counseling and referrals.

  • Marin AIDS Project

Students are needed as one on one companions, for group support, care-taking, presentations, translation, rides, tutoring, needle exchange and administrative help, such as reception, data base management, graphics, events and computer salvage and donation.

Populations Served:     Marin residents living with AIDS.

  • Image For Success

Image For Success was founded in 1999 to meet the needs of women in Marin County’s welfare-to-work program.  Clients, who are working on building their self-esteem through improved interviewing skills and business-appropriate wardrobes, come to Image For Success  from over 45 social service agencies in Marin.

Students are needed as personal shoppers and training facilitators. Open to special project implementation.

  • St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room

An interfaith-based organization who provides services and food to the poor.  The Dining Rooml was created in 1981 as a  free kitchen whose purpose is to serve the hungry with dignity and a welcoming demeanor. Each year their kitchen serves more than 80,000 hot meals, providing the only meal of the day for many of their diners.  Many of their diners are working poor, living below the poverty line.  Others are seniors and people with disabilities struggling to make ends meet

iReuse provides a web-based presence connecting people and businesses who have reusable items with people looking for a particular item(s).  A community minded business, people who post items on the site can designate the proceeds to the charity of their choice - that will include 501c (3) charities, schools and churches included!

  • YMCA's Youth Court

Marin County Youth Court is run by the Marin YMCA and is part of a nationwide Restorative Justice movement. It is a diversion program for first time juvenile misdemeanor offenders, offering them an opportunity to be tried by their peers in a sentencing hearing. If the defendant then completes his/her sentence within six months, there will be no juvenile record and the defendant may have the opportunity to stay on as a volunteer with Youth Court.

Students serve as youth attorneys, jurors and bailiffs for the hearings. Adult intern/volunteers are needed to provide guidance and training to the youth volunteers and defendants. Other administrative projects are also ongoing and benefit from intern/volunteer support. Good fit for Psychology and Political Science majors.

  • YMCA’s County Community School

The County Community School/Phoenix Academy Programs provide specialized services in a supportive environment in which our students have the opportunity to develop their potential.  Established in 1982, as part of the Marin County Office of Education Alternative Education Programs, the County Community School serves approximately 160 students with problems related to truancy, insubordination or law violation. The primary goal of the program is to help students establish appropriate school behavior and regular attendance, improve academic skills, make-up lost high school credit, and develop a positive self-image and appropriate social skills. We help you meet these goals and objectives in many ways.

  • Women Helping All People (WHAP)

Women Helping All People was formed in 1990 as a family resource center.  It currently consists of a K-8 school, an after school program, a summer program, a computer lab, GED and ESL classes and a shop for household and clothing items that are free to those in need.  Any volunteers are greatly appreciated for the support they give the children and adults, including mentoring.  WHAP provides a warm and welcoming environment where much is accomplished to benefit those it serves. Volunteers are needed as assistants and tutors for the school, the after school program and the summer program.  Tutors are needed for the computer lab and the ESL, GED program.

Their mission is to promote understanding and acceptance of human diversity through education, oral history, and the arts.  They work to eliminate prejudice and intolerance in order to promote true acceptance of others.   • Marin Abused Women Service's

Founded in 1977, MAWS' leads the effort to make our county free of violence, abuse and intimidation of women and girls.  Services and supports program include emergency hot-lines, housing facilities, support groups, and a men's program to teach men to stop their violence and abuse. In addition, MAWS implements several model prevention programs for diverse communities to utilize which increase awareness of domestic violence and abuse and levels of response by the public and private sector.
