Sharing Copyrighted Material

File Sharing and P2P

Yes, you can download the latest hot songs, videos and games on the internet just like you can drive 100 mph on the highway. Both are illegal, and both have cops watching for you.

Boston University graduate student ordered by federal court to pay four record labels $675,000 in damages for illegally downloading 30 songs and sharing them online. Click here for details.

Social Media

It is fun to upload music, images and video to social networking sites like Facebook or You Tube. Just remember that YOU should hold the copyright to any works that you copy and distribute. Linking out directly to the authorized distributor of the copyrighted work is a better option.

Sharing Tests & Course Materials

Your professors and instructors own the copyright to all material that they have created for your class including syllabus, tests and other handouts. Sharing this with friend or posting online (on sites such as CourseHero) without expressed permission from your professor or instructor is a violation of copyright.
