Occupational Therapy Department chair Dr. Ruth Ramsey presented a poster entitled “Strong and Stable: Preventing Falls and Promoting Community Mobility in Older Adults” at the 2009 conference of the American Occupational Therapy Association, created an on-campus wellness program for older adults, developed a community -based fall prevention program with the Marin County Division of Aging, and produced the third annual “CarFit” event with the Marin County Commission on Aging, providing safety assessments and information on older driver issues to over 60 participants. Dr. Ramsey continues her active involvement in POTAC, the psychiatric occupational therapy action coalition, and recently completed a community emergency response provider training course given by the City of San Rafael Emergency Services Department. She also had a short personal essay entitled “Making Marmalade” published in the September 8, 2008 edition of OT Practice.
Dr. Ruth Ramsey is working with occupational therapy students to develop and implement several community health initiatives this fall. Occupational therapy students and faculty will partner with representatives from the Marin County Division of Aging and the Marin County Commission on Aging to present the third annual CarFit event. The goal of this free event is to check how well older drivers "fit" in their cars, with respect to several critical safety features, such as, seat belts, mirrors and seat cushions. The goal of this event is to keep mature drivers on the road longer and to help them drive more comfortably and safely. Additionally, occupational therapy students are participating in the annual Marin County Senior Information Fair, and in the Bi-National Health Week Events throughout Marin County, designed to promote the health of migrant and disadvantaged communities.
Dr. Janis Davis presented at the International Listening Association’s 30th Annual Convention in Milwaukee on March 20th, 2009. She was a featured panelist on “Conducting Qualitative Listening Research” and presented a paper titled, “In Their Own Words: Healthcare Professionals’ Conceptualizations of Listening”.
