Ruth Ramsey, EdD, OTR/L

Ruth Ramsey Southwest National ParksDr. Ruth Ramsey is an associate professor and the founding Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy. She holds a Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from San Jose State University and a Doctorate in Education from the University of San Francisco. She also holds Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degrees in Dance.

Dr. Ramsey practiced clinically in mental health settings with adolescents, adults and seniors. She recently published two book chapters on community-based occupational therapy for person with psychiatric disabilities. She is also very interested in issues of healthy aging and has authored or co-authored several posters and presentations on this topic. She currently sits on the Marin County Fall Prevention Task Force; has produced several CarFit events promoting safe driving for older drivers; and helped develop the Healthy Seniors program which brings older adults onto the Dominican campus to work with occupational therapy students and faculty to maintain independent community living.

Dr. Ramsey was recruited by Dominican in 1996 to develop the occupational therapy program and has since grown it to over 150 majors in two tracks; transitioned it to a graduate program; and led it through three successful national accreditations. She believes that chairing the department is a creative process similar to writing a symphony or creating a quilt whereby you start with a vision; have the right people working with you, and ensure the curriculum is fully integrated into a coherent, cohesive whole. She is passionate about recruiting the best students; mentoring faculty; creating courses; and developing community partnerships to promote health and wellness for all, regardless of age or ability level.

Dr. Ramsey is active in professional occupational therapy organizations; has served on the Commission on Practice for the American Occupational Therapy Association; and sees an exciting future for occupational therapy as a full participant in national and state-level health care reform efforts. Her leisure activities include traveling, gardening, reading, hiking, and visiting art museums. Link to Dominican Scholar Selected works page.
